Hey Gang,
This thread was to good to let it die! So after building other planes for myself and working on customer planes, I decided to resurrect the thread and finish my 47..

I everyone is doing well and getting ready for warm sunny days..
My goal is to be ready to shoot primer in a few weeks and start all the scale stuff..
I really want her in the air something in April or May..

Here are some pics showing where I picked back up..

I first started with the wing fillets, nothing to exciting there. I do plan on wrapping them down at the leading edge like Gary did, making for a nice transition to the belly pan..

The belly pan was next and where I had a plan to make it strong, just in case I have to make a gear up landing.. The pics do all the talking here.. Lol

In the last pic you might be wondering what the strings coming out of my bolt tubes are all about.. Well after searching high and low for the right size tube, I made a discovery at the dollar store.
Cheap box of Tampons.. Lol
The applicator as my wife told me what it was is the perfect diameter and is pretty stout..

Then came the fun part..

I ruff cut my sheeting and sprayed it down with a mix of ammonia and water 50/50. Pinned them in place on the compound curves and let dry over night..

Once they were dry, I started fitting and gluing..
The spray foam worked out great, a ton of strength and very little weight..

I had a slight flat spot on the fuse aft the belly pan.. Tony builder turned me on to a cool product called easy sand.. I used it to get close then finished with spackle.. It gave me a tuff skid shield behind the b.p.

Looking good Jimbo, what muffler are you using on the DLE85?

Thanks Tony..
Was thinking of calling Jtech, a guy I know just had one made for the same plane.. Lol

Are you happy with the one they made for you? I'm using the FS cowl, it's a smidge smaller.
I changed the 1/8 light ply that caps the 1/4" firewall, to soft, with aircraft ply. I also want to wrap the motor box with Ap and extend it out so I can use poplar tri-stock there as well. Just not real keen on the flush design with LP.
I know you said the muff was tight, need to pick it up before I start adding wood..

the Jtech fits good, I am happy with it as it is well made. I shimed my engine 1/4" just to give some wiggle room. I also use a prop hub exstenion to move the cowl a little more forward.

Awesome Jimbo, I'm glad you are getting back on her. I was wondering how you were doing and thought about giving you a call a few times. We need to catch up sometime.

Nice job on the belly pan!

I have quite a few flights on mine now, engine is doing great and still my favorite plane. You'll see what I mean when you get yours done. You'll wish you had finished her sooner.

Hey buddy, glad to see you flying yours, she sure looks pretty.. I will give you a call Sunday early eve so we can catch up..

The belly pan is rock solid now, but being I built it for a gear up landing, you know how that works, I will never need it! But that would be a good thing..

The muffler is there standard TFGS P-47 in cowl muffler. I did tell them that the muffler was about a 1/4" to far from the cylinder head that's why I shimed mine a 1/4 at the mount but they are adjusting that, just remind them unless you want to move the engine a 1/4"
they are making me a custom muffler for my kit build that is a little smaller and has scale exhaust exits.

Not it sure when I will run mine but soon as I need to get it on the test stand soon to break in the bowman ring. Did you put a bowman ring in yours.....yet?

TB,
I just got the motor on Tuesday. I'm kicking around the idea on the Bowman, but haven't decided if I will or not.. All my other DLE's were stock and perform awesome on redline 40-1. The 60twin in my Nemesis is running 110 octane and redline with straight headers no mufflers.. It screams!

Are you doing the Bowman ring on yours?

Yes I have the bowman ring in all my engines, gives you better starting and lower idle, little more on the top end. Only $20 with gasket kit.

I know we have all been there on a build, when something just doesn't fit or look right and it drives you bonkers!!

For me, it's this dang canopy! The one you buy from topflite is to small, second one I have tried.. It's a 1/6 scale and the plane is 1/5.6.. With it on the bottom rails are well in to the razorback and I would have to build up the sides of the fuse so high, that it covers the corner instruments on my dash..
I did some looking and the Ziroli is 1/5 scale, with better dimensions than the TF. It came in today and is just a tick large, but I feel with some trimming and fitting I can make it all look right..
I will mock up the cockpit so you can see how bad the fit is with the TF..
Any thoughts are appreciated..

Jimbo

Jimbo,

if if memory recalls, there is supposed to be some extra balsa sheeting that glues up the sides a little more. Wouldn't that make up the difference in the canopy. Let me see if I can find some pics.
