Very nice work John M. You really are an artist. By the way, I looked on the back of my cub book and the price tag was printed on the cover, 17.95! Wonder why they want so much now for a new one?

Thanks Bird... an artist I wish... I'm loosing my dexterity, I need my16 year old fingers back.

Its called inflation bird... with a tad of greed on top... depending on how long ago you bought your copy, $37 is quite inflated... maybe I'll get the $11 copy instead.

John, the step look's good and most of us whom add them usually do the same, move them back a hair. It's the small details, personal touches, that set them apart. Another detail you may consider is some hand grips at the rear just in front of the stab a lot of cubs had them. The would pick the tail up and move it around.

Nice looking detail John M.! Next time build it that way you only have yourself to blame! I can relate to the "loosing my dexterity" part my fingers are so stiff now days I just can't seem to get them to move in the directions they use to. I took a fall and landed on my right them on a piece and angle iron and the resulting arthritis is to the point the slightest bump causes me to see starts. My father in-law was right old age ain't for sissies!

Acerc, that's exactly what I did was to move it back... I could have twisted it outwards more, but then the bracket that attaches to the gear pivot wouldn't have worked; would have been too long with a big dogleg in it.

The lift handles are already in process... I made a set for my sig j3 from a set of full scale plans that were reduced to 1/4 scale... my intentions with the plans, were to one day build a 1/4 "true" scale cub right down to the control cables, pulleys, tail jack screw, etc... but I may have them redrawn / reduced to 1/3 scale... 1/3 scale lends itself better to do the details... but I don't know when, or if that will ever get done.

Well I got this ARF for something to fly.. I knew it wasn't going to be perfect, but this one got thrown around during shipping... I think my frustrations and disgruntled attitude will disappear once I get it flying ... I think its going to fly well from what I can see of it... just making sure all the critical structural parts are sound... one thing that concerns me though, is the amount of right thrust built into the firewall, damn near 3 degrees, or more !!

Ouch, that fall even sounds painful... soak your hands in some hot water with some epsom salts in it, and get yourself one of those therapy balls that you squeeze to exercise your fingers, it will help loosen up your fingers... it helps me some, but your inlaw is right, getting old sucks.

I finally did it.! successful maiden the other day. It took off after about 3 metres and with two clicks down on the elevator it flew beautiful I couldnt be happier right now. It is the first time EVER I fly my own kit build. Only thing left to do now is to find a paint that matches the covering on the plane. This seems to be almost impossible though..

Hopefully you have a paint store there that has a paint match system where they have a camera like devise that will take a picture of the object and make a code for the paint machine to mix the paint. We have them here but as I said, I hope you have one there.

I have a Cub with Bright Yellow Ultracote on it and I found the Ultracote Bright Yellow paint to work if sprayed over white primer only. If you can find someone that still has some you might try it it looks right from the picture. The bad news is Ultracote discontinued matching paint.

Guys it’s time for a renewal drive for my site. www.thecubden.org The Cub Den site is 100% funded by you the viewers. Our renewal is up October 15, and without your help we will go off line. Please click the donate button below to help support the site. Our goal is $168 for a 2 year renewal. Again Thanks for your support. I have a donate link on my main page. The last time I did a drive you guys stepped up enough to pay for 2 years.

I covered the wing on my 1/5 Wings Maker J-3 W/"CubYellow" Solartex yesterday. I like the way the products is to work with, but it a bit translucent.

That's because for Solartex to keep it light they use minimal layers of primer and paint. The most important to reduce opacity is an aluminum pigmented coating of which Solartex does not add. To eliminate the opacity one could use the silver Solartex and paint over it. But for Cubs the opacity is actually scale, most Cubs do not get the aluminum coating to aid in the owners expense when painting one.

Put the first flight on a friends 1/4 scale Sig Cub. Saito 130 twin for power. First time flying a cub. Even with a somewhat warped aileron, it flew nice. He has about five years into building it. Definitely will make a good pilot out of someone as it needs to be flown with both sticks! Forgot to get pics. Big Dubro 4-5" air tires with Robart scale landing gear. Great flight. Will be even better one a new aileron is built.

I had the same observation.. my inlaw went as far as to contact Solarfilm regarding the translucency... apparently its due to the fact that they are forced to use environmentally friendly "organic" pigments... and unfortunately some colors are more transparent than others... as Ace points out, weight is a factor; the solartex silver and white have the best opacity due to the aluminum and titanium content... silver having more of a painted fabric appearance, somewhat like the 21st century painted fabric (made by solarfilm called Glosstex in Europe).

You can paint over the top of the cub yellow solartex with some cub yellow paint of your choice... Nelsons paints http://www.nelsonhobby.com/hobby_paint.php works well, as does the KlassCote epoxy paints http://www.klasskote.com/... you'll need at least 3 coats to bring up the opacity to something that resembles the real finish.

Or you can do what I'm going to do, which is cover the aircraft in untreated natural solartex... then seal it with 2 coats of clear klassCote, with at least 3 coats of cub yellow klassKote on top in the simi gloss finish (which is a combination 50/50 mix of the gloss and satin part B hardener)

Bill S,

Congrats on the maiden flight Twin_Flyer... I flew my Sig cub with the same Saito FA130TD engine... not a bad power plant once you get it setup... switching over to a OS FT160 with a bigger prop.

John M,

I have a can of Cub Yellow Lusterkote. I'm going to cover one of the elevator halves W/the Solartex & give it a few light coats of the Lusterkote.

To be honest, I'm not really happy with the color anyway. Not really what I have come to expect as "Cub Yellow". I have used Monokote & 21st Century in Cub Yellow as well Cub Cadet Yellow spray paint on my mowing deck. They are all a close match as is the Lusterkote.

The Solartex Cub Yellow is to "lemony yellow" IMO.

For the price, I'm a bit disappointed. If I was planning on painting it anyway, I could have used Koverall & saved a lot of $$$$$!
