50% P-51D Stage Prop Build
I was asked to build a stage prop - a 50% p-51D (18.5’ ws, currently 80lbs). The plane is fairly scale, wings (with battery operated lights), stab, rudder are detachable, and it will be painted in Tuskegee colors. It should be finished in about 2 weeks and I’ll post a build thread if anyone’s interested.
After the beginning of June I’ll need to get rid of it, anyone want it in trade for a giant scale kit?Preferably no P-51’s!

I think I may know of someone who would want to hang it in their hanger. Send me some contact info and I ill put you two in touch. What is the scheme your doing and how much do you think you would want for it. WE are not to far from each other so transport may not e to difficult. A build thread would be great.....

pulled out another pic. here we're putting on the wings for the first time to see how they fit. The plane has two hooks so it can be suspended.

I welcome paint sugesstions, the scheme we currently have is for a P-51B, not the D. I'm not sure the P-51B paint scheme was used on later models - haven't done any home work on paint yet.

Thanks for the paint schemes, all we had picsfor was a P-51B and we'll definitely use one of yours. I'd like to sell/trade the plane and re-coop the cost of some materials that we're not getting reimbursed for (glue sticks, wood...), but if we can't sell or trade it we'll will definitely donate it.
We'll be sheeting tomorrow and Saturday, then start painting. I'll post some pics showing construction, as well as small “defects” such as overlapping sheeting producing a small ridge rather than completely flat panels with rivets.Btw, we’ll put on panel lines but no rivets, after all it’s a stage prop…

A few more building pics showing how the plane will be suspended, rough fit of the canopy, rudder and fin that will be re-made on Thursday, no airfoil on the stab(wings have a correct airfoil).

A pic from early in the build, we took plans I found in a P-51 thread and blew them up, then just started cutting out Styrofoam formers and ribs - just made it up as we went along. I liked the plans below, thought they were well done and used them for the fuselage.Wing plans were from a different source and a different scale, it took only a few simple calculations to match them to the fuse plans.Canopy was from a third set of plans that were only “ok”, not worth posting.
