Default Two quick tips for TF Spitfire or any build

I just started a Top Flite Spitfire build and thought I’d post a couple of techniques I use since I haven't seen them posted before.

The first is using a maker to color the leading edge core of a fin and stab. I do not sand the colored leading edge until the fin or stab is 99% shaped, that way I don’t accidently sand away the leading edge contour. A little confusing to write out but the pic below may help.

The second is using machinist blocks to ensure right angles. I bought my set on eBay for about $20. The blocks are steel and milled to exact sizes, and all have perfect 90 degree edges. I use them on all corners and parts that are perpendicular to each other. Nothing I dislike more than a corner that is supposed to be square but isn’t…

Good stuff Scrathie. I don't think I could build a model these days without my 1-2-3 blocks! Been using them for a number of years and am not sure how I got along without them for so long. Just be careful if you combine them with a glass building surface. The picture below was the result of dropping a 1-2-3 block on a piece of 1/2" plate glass from a height of about 4 inches!

Wow - it looks like something my son would have done! Are those neodymium magnets?

The blocks are 1-2-3 machinist blocks Scratchie. So named because they are exactly 1" x 2" x 3" and machined from solid steel.
