Considering how conservative kit manufacturers are about putting out an existing design they already own and what the say they need sales wise for a new kit to be profitable, I don't think SIG would have put this kit out if they didn't think they could sell more than an initial short run. As my old boss Jerry use to say, They ain't in business to make friends and influnce people, they are in business to put food on the table, pay the bills, and keep the lights on.

I have a question for all of you guys who are seriously considering building this beautiful monster. Where will you be building this thing? In a two-car garage? A one-car garage? A barn? A basement with a 31" wide door?

Thanks in advance fellow flyers.

You would be surprised what you can build in a small are or in temporary spaces.

I started this morning and completed the fuse (mostly)
I am going to do a mod on the front to have a removable hood to acess the fuel tank ,,,etc,,,
Looking at the floor,,,I can see how 85 lbs will shed to a 40 lb flying weight,
That is only the fuse excess on the floor,
That is the power plant,,,Yeah thats a DA170!

I'm also going to make a hatch on the front hood as I'm putting a Saito FG-90R3 in it and the carb will be behind the firewall.
Did you get a complete hardware kit? Mine is missing the landing gear blind nuts and bolts etc. Not a big deal as I can get them locally, but it would be nice to have a complete kit for the money.

I have to repair lots of crushed and shattered balsa pieces as the laser cutting was so good, a lot of the pieces fell out of the sheets and ended up at the side of the box..the box was basically undamaged.nothing that can't be fixed.

As Fed-Ex etc, generally treat parcels as disposable items, some better packing of the balsa sheets is warranted.

Cheers,
Dave.

The specs call for a 50 - 65cc engine. A 170cc engine is almost 3 times as much as required.

Maybe this airframe is so large it can handle it?

Dave,
Since we have the first run of the 168 we are going to have some discrepancies...as long as they are small...It is not going to keep me from building.

I also had a lot of pieces fall off the sheet, not a lot of broken pieces but had to take time to re-organize ...

I wonder when the cowling is going to be sent?

I have a 1/3 scale PUP with a 215cc MOKI and it is much smaller.
It is a JW pup kit from Vogelsang aeroscale with the same "tab lock" system as the 168... which is incredible strong!
Goal is to make a 12lb candy dropper for kids charity events..

Do the instructions specify how to build the plane such that it has removeable tailfeathers?

I agree.
Thes issues are minor and easily overcome, I did have an e-mail from Mike Stott (Sig) and he is going to send me the missing items. He did mention they are making a new cowl with a more pleasing shape and it will be sent out soon.

I think there are always growing pains with new products such as this however; with a company like SIG you know they will take care of you and get the glitches ironed out! At least they had the intestinal fortitude to bring out a new kit (even if it isn't the one I would have liked or the size I prefer) which is more than I can say about a lot of other brands!

I just wish it wasn't so expensive. I can buy a Proctor museum scale kit for less. It costs as much as both the B-25 and P-61 kits. That's the part that is holding me back.

A little tip that may help...

The main spar for the wing center section is 70" long, and laminated up out of many pieces.
Each length comprises of 2 or 3 sections which I just tacked together with ca.
I then drilled a few 1/4 holes in the sections , (just like laminating the fuse doublers.) a good coat of epoxy, I use the West System, and a drop of ca in the hole keeps the spar lengths aligned when you clamp or weight the spar down on a flat surface to cure.

I can't help but think on something this big with large mating surfaces if CA shouldn't be avoided and something allowing a little more work time like epoxy or PVA (Titebond, etc) shouldn't be the order of the day?

Wish I could afford this one but alas, I cannot, so I'll have to be happy building the Kadet Sr.
Maybe I could stretch the wings a wee bit.

Sounds like a plan but I would keep it under 14 feet.
