Building a Dynaflite Super Decathlon

RE: Building a Dynaflite Super Decathlon
Oh I completely agree, no worries with that. I have it balanced per the manual when the tank is dry, I'm just convinced that it would fly and handle much better if it balanced on the same point when wet as well.

I'd like to stay in touch with this forum. I will be building a Dynaflite Super Decathlon as soon as I get my other twoprojects into the air.

I still visit it. I have one to build. In fact, I've had it for over a year and have been behind schedule in getting it started. I plan to start it here in a couple of months when I get a couiple of other ones off the building board. Probably around the first of August before I begin. This has been a great thread and I plan to use a lot of the ideas I read on this thread.

RE: Building a Dynaflite Super Decathlon
What are you powering yours with and what servos are you using? I have a Saito 1.20 four stroke and wonder if this will be enough to pull it around.
I am also thinking about a paint scheme that is more like an Edge 540 or Extra 300 than a traditional Decathlon.....Just wonder what peoples thoughts are on that?
Let me know what you think....
Have just turned the wings over to start sheeting the bottoms and finish them up....Building them both at the same time (Two build tables) I'll post some pictures soon.

I'm not sure the 1.20 would have enough to pull it. Maybe if you kept it incredibly light, but I think it would still struggle in any kind of steep climb. With a G38 the power is good, not unlimited, but probably just right. I can make a normal takeoff roll and pull vertical at the end of the runway and climb just high enough for a stall turn before running out of forward speed. To me that's about perfect.
I also finally got my smoke setup going in the last few weeks.

Cobra, Great looking plane and fantastic pictures! I guess I'll save the 1.20 for another plane and look for a G38 to power the Decathlon. What smoke system are you using, any pictures of the install?
Here is something I drew up for the paint scheme...Lets hear the thoughts (And nobody borrow it without permission LOL)

Thanks guys! What that second picture doesn't show was the hiccup where it dipped even lower and I had to push it back up to 6' or so. Every single person watching from the pits was certain I'd dragged the rudder through the dirt.
Moody, no pictures of the smoke install unfortunately. I got the setup along with the engine from B&B, and it's the B&B Super Smoke pump setup. I built the pump in on the tank floor just behind the firewall, then have 2 16 oz tanks (also from B&B) side mounted at the back of the tank floor/under the windshield. This gets them a good bit closer to the CG and reduces any adverse changes as the gas and oil burn off in flight.

Grotesquebass,
Not dead, just idle for a bit. You should have no problem with the G38 and its mounting. I have a Quadra 42 on mine and had no problem.

RE: Building a Dynaflite Super Decathlon
Hi Decathlon fans,
Glad this thread isn't dead. I will be working on mine within the month. I plan on modding it to make it a bit more scale. I have 2 engines options to use. I have a converted 31cc ryobi wacker engine and I also have a new Supertigre G3250 on the way. Which engine would be the best for this model? I would like to use one or the other instead of purchasing another.
Thank you,
Rick

Not really a Dynaflite Decathlon but I think you will like this one.
It`s a 1/4 semi scale S. Decathlon from Modell-Expert.
Beginning this year I`ve made is convertable for waterflying
Building from land to water or vise versa will only take 10-15 minutes.
I just recently maked the waterrudders retractable.
Here the maiden video of the water version:
Super Decathlon water maiden 6min 12sec / 15.3mb

RE: Building a Dynaflite Super Decathlon
rsad,
That is a difficult choice of engines. The Ryobi is probably heavier, which is a plus 'cause you will need the weight. The ST is probably more powerful, almost always helpful, but the fuel cost is so much higher and you have to stop flying earlier to start cleaning to goo off your bird. I suppose I would go with the Ryobi and call it a Decathlon (160hp) instead of an SD (180hp). But, that is just me.
Good Luck!

RE: Building a Dynaflite Super Decathlon
I am starting to have 2nd thoughts about the fuel consumption for the G3250 LOL! I may return it. I have started looking at commercially available gas engines. So much more than zenoahs and quadras available now. I may put electronic on the Ryobi also. I guess I have a lot of time to figure out what to power this with. I will post my progress. I have to say that everyone's SD look great...........did cruzzmissle ever finish his? I read a lot of this thread but did see much after the strut attachment.............

Don't bypass the G-38/Q-42 just yet. They are a very good match for the SD. The weight is about right for balance and you don't have the second set of batteries in the airframe to charge and maintain. 90% of the justification for electronic ignition is weight savings. True you usually get a smoother idle, but little other benefit. Oh yes, and easy starting too.

RE: Building a Dynaflite Super Decathlon
Beepee,
Thanks for the suggestions. I will be checking out the G38 this week and the DA50. Will be starting to build soon. I hope my mods won't be too difficult: The fuse on the kit is too wide beind the wing, it doesn't angle in...I will change that. The side stringers and lonerons are not accurate to scale. The window sizes and angles are not correct. The bottom of the fuse is not correct either. I hope these won't be too difficult to straighten out........it's only wood LOL! Have to put the top window in also...........Cubs, Citabrias, Decathlons, Champs are all my favorites. If the model turns out well, I will do an electric version for my son...........if he helps.
I am in the midst of a couple of builds right now but I am going to clear the tables and do this one now since it looks to be a pretty fast frame up. Thanks again.

RE: Building a Dynaflite Super Decathlon
Just bought a dynaflite super decathlon with a supertigre S3000 attached. I found a line tap in the back of the crankcase blocked off. Is this possibly a pressure line for a smoke setup? U guys have been saying gassers are only capable of this. But it seems this glo motor has the capability? I'm curious.. I'm contemplating doing a home brew smoke setup. I can make a regulator... But... where would I get a servo activated on off valve? Thanks for your help.

yanickr,
What prop does it throw? You can put most any engine on the SD that throws an 18" prop. Hard to fit anything larger, not enough power with anything smaller. Weight is not a problem. I have extra lead in the nose with a Quadra 42.
