I was thinking of building one of these this winter. Are they any good? Anyone have any tips for the build? Any modifications, areas to beef up etc? How about motor size ?[sm=lol.gif]

I have one of these that I just bought. I am interested in hearing experiences also. Does it build heavy? What engine are most using? I was thinking about the new Norvel AX 40 since it is so light, but if the kit builds heavier than advertised I may go with a 46. Either that or put the kit on a diet if necessary. Someone out there must have flown one of these!

Cheers!

dont have one but have seen em at the field and they fly great. i have built several sig products and find the quality of design and what you find in the box to be exceptionally good.

I have one of these. Built as per directions, no particular probs,
except for not using the plastic hatch covers (I used ply and
balsa).
I just pulled most of the equipment out of mine recently for
another project. With the just the two aileron servos in it
(didn't feel like pulling them out) it weighs in at 2lbs, 14 oz.
It's covered in Ultracote and I had used a GMS .47 on it which
provided a tremendous amount of power.
The plane flys very well, the only thing it does not do well is
glide. If you deadstick it glides like a brick due to the drag.

Thanks Jerry,

If the airframe weighs 2 lbs 14 oz with just 2 servos in it, you're looking at about 5 lbs with equipment. I'd like to get down around 4 and 1/2 lbs or under. Should be able to do it without too much surgery, I think I'll go with the 46 in any case. I have a GMS 47 as well. It used to be in a SIG SE but I've sold that plane. I loved the SE, but I've had it for 6 years and was looking for something a bit different. Thanks for the info.

Cheers!

I just realized I had added 2 oz of lead to the tail for balance
and it was weighed with this in place.
So if you use a lighter engine you might avoid this.
Best of luck with it.

I've got one of these and it flies great. It will do just about anything you want to do with it . I had to repair it once due to a flat spin that I couldn't get out of.(just broke the aileron horn loose) I'm building another one that will have the rudder and elevator servos in the tail so I don't need the hatches in the wings or the lead in the tail.

Engine is OS 61FX with Macs muffler. 13-4 wide blade APC prop

4 ailerons servos. All aileron servos are Hitec HS-81 with Y-harness on each wing and then a Y-harness to connect the 2 wings together. So 3 Y-harness' for the wings.

Single JR 537 on the rudder. Hitec HS-81 on throttle.

2 Hitec HS-81 servos for elevators with Smartfly equalizer to match them up.

Thats 8 servos in the plane. 7 Hitec HS-81s and a single JR 537 on the rudder.

Hitec 555 RX with 1200mah NIMH 6V battery.

12oz tank.

Flew great. Landed like a brick with lead ballast. Don't deadstick it unless your REALLY close to the runway and lined up on your approach. Typical biplane with a fat wing. Lots of drag,

But, it flew GREAT!!!

Sold it to a guy in Conneticut-- and UPS smashed it to kibbles and bits. Thank god I insured it.

All up weight DRY was 5 pounds.

Thanks for all the info guys. Isn't a 61 fx a little overkill? I was thinking of a .46 fx. Has anybody modified the basic design? Such as a counterbalanced rudder? Any building tips? Thanks, Keep all the coments coming! Duane

Hello; I built one of those last year, I bought the expensive smoke purple covering for it. It came out beautiful. I put a Saito 56 in it and did everything according to the instructions. I only flew it 4 times when Ed Eng came to our field and just had to have it. I wasn'
t ready to give it up, so I told him I would sell it to him for $375. without the engine. I sure was surperised when he wrote the checque out and handed it to me. I ripped the engine out and handed it to hi9m. I haven't seen it since. It was a great flyer though I didn't have any dead sticks with it, I could see that it wouldn't glide very well without an engine.

I put lots of effort into making it really pretty then sold it after only 4 flights. Seema a bit of a waste.
