Things are really slowing down,
I have the rudder, stab and elevator covered, shrunk and weave filled. I just finished applying a coat of dope to all the surfaces on the fuse that will contact the covering. I am getting ready to get the wing out and give it a going over and give it a coat of dope.

I filled a few dings in the wing and gave it 2 coats of nitrate dope sanding between each coat. I also gave the fuse 2 coats as well. The wing is as slick as can be and I cannot wait to see how it looks covered
I am going to apply Koverall to the cockpit interior tomorrow and the cabin upright supports. With any luck the plane will be covered by the end of the weekend and I will have started applying the rib stitching.
I have finally made my decision on the paint scheme, it will be white with a bright red lightning bolt and red sunburst on the wings and tail. Should look different than all the other Clipped Wing Cubs out there.

Day 26 of the build!!!
I decided to go with a door handle and latches instead of relying on magnets to keep the door shut. I built the handle and latch pin mechanism tonight and I will install them after the door is covered and painted.
The bottom of the wing is now covered and it came out great, no wrinkles, bumps or belmishes. I set the iron on low heat and shrunk the bottom covering just enough to take the larger wrinkles out, the covering is still loose and I will not shrink it tight until I get the top covered so I can shrink them evenly. I love using this Sig Koverall, don't think I will ever go back to plastic film. Here are a couple pic of the wing bottom covering.

Even clipped, that's a helluva wing. I'm definitely going to build my BUSA as a 2- piece; I can't remember if it's 1 or 2 piece per the plans, but I'll make it 2 if I have to redesign the whole top section of the plane. You can take that thing surfing, or make yourself a harness and hang-glide with it. It's looking great.

Thanks Kodges,
I finished covering the wing tonight and applied two coats of nitrate dope, I will give it a light sanding tomorrow and apply another coat of dope. I am extremely happy with the way it turned out
I have just enough material left to cover the fuse and aileron's I will cover the aileron's tomorrow night as well. The fuse will wait until this weekend. I have to mount the engine and run the throttle cable and mount the stab so I can run the elevator control rod and mount the fin. I will also be rigging my Pull/Pull cables for the rudder. Once that is all complete I will cover the fuse then start adding stitching and reinforcement tape.
I am on schedule to have the plane ready for paint in 2 weeks
Here are a couple pics of the wing.

anthony, your covering looks very good...i can't see a seam anywhere! my use of koverall on the 1/6th version did not come out as well as i had hoped. i found it difficult to hide the seams particularly on the fuse. must be operator error.

Thanks Tubig,
The seams turned out great, I had to play around with the thinner mixture until I found a consistancy that worked the best. You can see and feel the seams until you get the 3rd coat of dope on. I will also be adding reinforcement tape which should completely hide all the seams. I can honestly say this is going to be the best looking plane that I have built to date. I am getting close to the end and the anticipation is building, I have to keep myself from geting carried away and going too fast and making a mistake. I am getting ready to cover the ailerons and work on the control setup in the fuse.

I went to the Hobby Shop today to buy my engine and he had just sold the last Magnum 120 he had in stock[:@] He is going to order me one monday andI should have it by Friday. I am going to go ahead and cover the fuse, I should have plenty of room to get to the blind nuts for the engine mounts. Running the throttle cable will not be an issue either so I will proceed with the covering. Will post some more pics tonight of tomorrow.

I made some progess tonight,
I mounted the Stab, elevator and Fin. I installed the elevator pushrod and made up the Pull/Pull cables for the Rudder and adjusted them for fit. Tomorrow I will start covering the fuse. I have a lead on a little used OS 120 FS, I will see if I can get my hands on that engine for a good price.

One suggestion on the servos. You may want to thank about flipping them upside down, and making a removable hatch on the bottom. This would give you easy access to them if needed. That's how I did mine.

I thought about that but I can easily get to them when I remove the luggage area with 2 screws. I am hoping to be ready for rib stitching by the end of the week.

I have the fuse bottom and one side covered, the shape of the fuse looks really nice.
I will cover the other side tomorrow and hopefully the top.
I picked up some rare earth magnets at Radio Shack today and installed one in the door and one in the door frame. They are flush mounted and will be hidden by the covering. They appear to have enough strength to hold the door shut but I am going to add an additional set tomorrow just to be sure. I will use Pins to hold the window shut with the door, as you shut them together they will lock in place. The door interior panel will be removeable so I can install a handle and latch later if the magnets do not do the job, I already have all the parts fabricated if I need them.
I am attaching a few pics, you can see the small round magnets that I recessed in the door and the bottom of the door frame. I also attached a pic of the fuse as it stands now.

I didn't get as much done tonight as I wanted,
I covered the right side of the fuse and added another set of magnets to the door and the frame. I am confident that this will keep the door and window shut while in flight, these little magnets are strong!!!!!
Covering the fuse is taking longer than I thought it would but this is my 1st time working with Koverall. So far so good

The fuse is now totally covered and shrunk. I will apply 3 coats of dope to fill the weave and blend the seams. The only items left to cover are the door and window frame. I will start making rib stitch strips tomorrow and will try to complete all the rib stitching this weekend. Here are a couple pics of the fuse.

The fuse is now complete,
I sanded the fuse and applied a third coat of dope tonight. I made a sheet of rib stitches and will let them dry overnight before cutting the strips. I fixed the squared off edges on the Robart Cub Gear and filled the open ends of the tubing with Bondo and sanded to shape then covered the gear legs with Koverall, they are now ready for paint. I am going to reassemble the plane tomorrow and take it outside to get some good pics before I get started on the rib stitching.
My goal is to have the plane ready for the base color of paint next weekend, shouldn't be a problem!!

Make several pics from different angles on the gear, sil vous plait, por favor, bitte, puh-leez. I want to do the same to both my 1/5 and 1/4 scale gear, be nice to have custom "instructions". Watching your building thread has me itching to get going on one of my own, just too many irons in the fire right now; if I started now, it'd be like an alcoholic taking the first drink, and nothing else would get done until the plane was finished. It's hard enough just doing repair work and stuff to leave it alone until the real work is over. Great job you're doing, you should be allowed to break your arm patting yourself on the back, just wait until the plane's finished. Ken

I will take some pics for you after while,
My sheet of Rib Stitches did not work out[] I made them out of Taxidermy thread that I had on hand and it has a light wax coating which did not allow the dope to adhere the thread to the paper. I just got home from the store and bought some heavy cotton thread and will have to make another sheet. As soon as I get the sheet made I will assemble the cub and get some pics.

Khodges,
Here are some pics of the gear, all I did was round up the ends of the tubing where they had been cut off flat. Once I had it rounded I filled the end of the tube with Bondo and sanded it to a nice smooth radius after drying.

As Jackie Gleason used to say---"How Sweet it Is !!!!" Have you thought of unwaxed dental floss for the rib stitching? It flattens out better than the cotton thread would. Are you going to glue it on, or actually stitch it through the ribs?

BTW, the plane sittng on the sidewalk w/o wheels reminded me of an airplane aphorism: You know you forgot to drop your landing gear when it takes full power to taxi

I thought about the dental floss but I wanted something a little larger. The one thing I have noticed with rib stitching is that when you try to make it to scale it is almost as if it isn't there. I want the stitching to show up so I went with a little larger thread than scale. Here is a pic of my Rib stitch sheet. It is 17" wide and has 17" of rib stitching, this one sheet should do the entire plane(wing, rudder, fin, stab, elevator). I will be covering the stitch strips with Johnson&Johnson 1/2" wetproof medical tape and using 1" all purpose tape for all the edges. This tape has a nice scale looking pinked edge to it.

Here is a Pic of my rib stitching, the rib on the right just has the rib stitch strip applied and the one on the left has the pinked tape applied over top of the stitch. Please give me some feedback on how you think this looks, this is my 1st attempt at rib stitching.

You're doing a great job Anthony!
You'll see how much fun a J-3 Cub is, I've always had one on my hangar, but my grandson buried the one I had some time ago (the one in the background of the pic), I'll be doing a Super Cub from a Balsa USA kit as soon as I finish painting my Spad XIII, I've a question for you, where did you get the pinking tape, I've been looking around for the one that I used to get for my Cubs and I can't find it anywhere (women used to use it for their hair), and yes, the pinking job looks really good, just wait until you paint it and then you will be plesantly surprised at how realistic they look, these Cubs certainly look like easy builds don't they, until you start the finishing process, oh well, the more work the more enjoyment one gets out of them, congratulations!

Walter. The old hair tape that you're talking about is not to scale. Yes I agree it looks great but the pinks are a little large to be scale. Stop in you local drugstore or pharmacy and look at the medical tape. Anthony used some tape by Johnson & Johnson. I used tape from Curad. Take a look at my site as I have full instructions on the rib stitching and the tapes. For the past 7 years I have been looking for blades that would cut this small of a pinking edge. If I could find them I could have a good business providing the tape cut from you favorite covering materiel. As you will see by my site I have tried several different ways to produce the pink edges.
