Thanks for that great explanation. Now I understand!

Have just started building the wings and was looking forward to finishing. The panel lines sure look like a great idea. Not sure if I am going to glass the plane or just go with Monocote. Guess with Monocote, I would just have to draw on the lines and then cover with clear coat. Not looking to compete at scale looks - just a sport flyer.

Has anyone uses a small Gas engine? Was wondering about the new Evolution 26GT2? Not sure if there is room for a wrap around muffler. Also not sure how much of the cowl would have to be cut out for cooling etc. Other option would be to use an OS 120 FS pumper.

Hello all,

Has anyone beefed up the servo tray to give more "bite" for the mounting screws? If so, how? I'm not sure how well a thin piece of ply is going to hold up to the constant movement and stress of the servos.

Thanks,

Skywriter:

I looked long and hard at the 26GT. I decided against it for four reasons: 1) It's very heavy 2) It's very expensive 3) It's very big (It won't fit inside the cowl) and 4) It's very powerful. At least 1 hp more than the Mustang needs.

Having said all that, I've still not decided what to use in mine. I'd love to go the four stroke route, but don't know if a 1.20 can be propped coarse enough to get a good turn of speed (say 80-90 mph). The engine I'd love to use is that RCV "pinecone" 1.20, but I'm reluctant to get involved with the cooling ducts required to keep that engine happy. I'm probably going to end up with some kind of kick ass .90 two stroke.

Hey give that Jet 90 a try those prop jet guys use em, what an engine go see the prop jet thread. You'll get some real speed from that 110-120mph with a 10x11 APC wish my stang had one go see them at..........

Anyone using the OS 120 2 stroke? This should be more power than the 4-stroke

Thing I don't like about using a 2 stroke is the muffler. With 4 stroke, at least it should be down below. Don't think a pitt style of muffler will fit in behind the engine. Motor box would need to be shortened etc.

This is what I used as a pattern. It came from someone on the forum and has to be sized when you print. I don't remember the scale factor but I had to print it out on legal size paper. Sorry it took so long to reply I have been fighting a kidney stone and have been FUBAR for three days.

Normally add a 1/4" x 1" 1/8" ply backing to most servo trays that are of the 1/8 thickness variety or balsa. This gives more bite to the screws. These can be fairly easily added after the fact if the servo tray is already installed in the plane.

I am going Ys 1.10 in mine. Huge power, low weight, should be pretty quick. I am also going keleo muffler on it. The four stroke will sound much better than a two stroke as well. An Os 120 2 stroke may be much for this, but it will be a heavy airplane when done. Anyhow, looking forward to hearing what you guys go with.

Thanks, skyriter. I think I'll do just that.

Zope Pope,

I hear really good things, power wise, about the ys 110. I also read that the ys puts out the same power as the o.s. 1.20 pumper. Of course, the ys 110 is much lighter than the o.s, but if I'm going to have to add weight to the front, I'll just go with the o.s. ( I hear these kits come out tail-heavy ).

Come on Bull you aren’t got that thing done yet? It's me Asphalt changed my name. The 120FS will pull any of these Stangs around with authority but we know 2 strokes have more power on the high end which can make it that much faster. Trade off I guess ugly muffler or higher speeds I don't know about you guys I think this bird looks like she's going 100mph just sitting there. Why the need for so much speed? With all the details we are putting on them you won't be able to see them at 120mph+ speeds anyway.

Keep her light and you should be just fine however most likely you won't have endless vertical performance with a 90FS. But it's not an Extra 300 either it is nice to have a bit more power just to keep you out of trouble. Don’t forget war birds tend to have higher wing loadings than most other planes do of the same size. It’s difficult for model designers to follow the actual scale lines of vintage war planes and have them fly well. Often some slight changes are made for improved model flight. We also add washout, dihedral and change the actual airfoil for better performance. But the real bottom line here is power and I myself really hate being in those situations wishing I had more.

The ys 1.10 is actually much more powerful than the OS 1.20 III surpass. You can sort of compare it almost to a Saito 150 (HP is not the same, but the YS has much more torque over the OS). My Ys 140 DZ is more powerful than a saito 180 believe it or not. Anyhow, i agree with sticktickler. These things are so quick looking. I can't wait to get mine done. I really don't want to start sanding though as I have a bad cough that I don't want to agitate anymore. Maybe i'll just throw on the good old mask. Hope everyone is doing well.

Sabre:

I have a Magnum 90FS on a 4*60 that I modified to be a float plane. With floats, it weighs 11 pounds, and the 90 hauls it around real nice. 9 pounds or so without floats, and although not a lot of vertical it performs nice. Not real fast though, and I wonder if you can prop it with enough pitch to be fast enough with a Mustang?

Hey sticktickler, good to hear from you. I know there's a lot of people here waiting on a maiden flight report. You have flown her, right? No, I havent got her done. I just started working on her after a long break. I'm installing the servos now and making sure they all operate properly without binding. How about that flight report???

As for the ys110, I know it is a torque monster. The hp rating of the ys 110 is 2.1, which is the same as the os 120 however ys does not provide the rpm's at which the 2.1 hp is produced. the os produces 2.1 hp at 12000 rpm. That having been said, I guess one cannot caompare the two accurately without the rmp at which the ys produces its 2.1 hp. Thanks for the correction zope.

Yep I want to see some pics with that report too. I was waiting to hear about it months ago when I first read this forum, then you dropped off and left us hangin. I thought you must have crashed it on your maiden and were too frustrated to post anything. Glad to see you've still got her in one piece.

i am not trying to build a speed demon. I just want good performance and the once in a while a high speed pass
but nothing like 90+ miles per hour
Instructions call for 13x6,8
I have a 14x6 that i have not used yet so we will see
Thanks for the info though

Bull & Cpig,
Firstly let me just say my summer was very busy and I did not have time to do much at all but work. And when a free day came up it was just too dang windy and wind all summer long. Timing and weather must coincide for a maiden flight of a war bird and they often don’t. So sadly I have not flown her as of yet I’m not afraid of her as I know she is well built and will fly just fine. I own NO hanger queens I fly all I build I’m just waiting for a good day to do it. So the good thing is she is still in one piece awaiting that very moment. A moment of beauty and glorious victory as she roars to the heavens only to return safely from another mission keeping the skies above our field safe from the dreaded German axis of evil. Too many video games sorry!
Here are some wall papers for you guys enjoy the last one is my P-51 in action!

Just could not bear the sight of her nose first in the ground

Hey Bull 51,

I had no idea about the OS 120 rpm problem. All i know is a ys 1.10 is much more powerful than my os120 surpass III. The rpm fact on it was very interesting. On 30% a ys 1.10 mustang (my plan) will be crazy. I'll get a video of the scale exhaust too when I get to that point. I am still sanding these wingtips.. [sm=rolleyes.gif]
