I've built the old Goldberg kit, best flying plane I've ever owned.
However, the U/C is too weak and bends on even the gentlest landing. After trying expensive spring steel 5mm wire, (which broke), I'm now fabricating a carbon fibre/kevlar U/C. The attachment area for the U/C can also do with some re-inforcing. (Don't ya hate the use of lite-ply for undercarriage doublers!!)
Mine flies great on an OS91Fx. Other planes with bigger engines seem to fly worse with the weight. Mine is very light, and the OS is a light engine. It will knife edge loop all day.

Steve,
how much does the os engine weigh? im going with he rcs 140 for the low operating cost. you wouldn't consider make two of those carbon fiber gears would you?

RCS 140
I talked with a guy that ran the RCS 140 on the Ultimate and this is what he had to say...
Good choice on the engine. Its a great little motor, you will love it. I sold my ultimate about a year ago. I didnt do any extra bracing for the RCS. Its not needed. I used the stock RCS muffler. It is a smoke muffler although I didnt use a smoke system. The engine was mounted inverted. The elevator servo was mounted behind the canopy on some cross bracing and the rudder servo was mounted in the stock location above the landing gear. It flew fantastic with the RCS, awesome vertical and it would hover at 3/4 throttle. I mounted the fuel tank over the CG on some cross bracing. The stock fuel tank location housed the ignition module. I used a 10oz dubro tank for 15 min flights. here are some pictures of the engine and airplane.
Looks like I am going with theRCS 140 also!!!

Is there an after market composite gear available for the Ultimate? Sold my Ultimate 2 years ago (mistake) and am going to build another this winter. Someone mentioned the "new" GB kits will be lazer cut. Is that just a rumor?

I am building one now and putting in a GMS 120.Are you using the supplied cowl or did you get a fiberglass.I think i will put aftermarket legs on it also because it deserves it.I guy in our club has a saito 150 in his and it is not an advantage. To much wieght for a plane this small and it can,t use all that power.I will cover mine like the box because no won else seems to and it will be instantly reconizable.

Eric,
what i did is went to sean tuckers website and downloaded the oricle .gif. and then i enlarged them with a copyer to the size i wanted (ill get the size i used if you want). then i cut them out and taped them to the back of the ultracote and cut out it out. you could have them made by a sign shop but since im 15 i have more time then money. post some pictures when you get it done.
hope this helps,
lee

i used the cowl they gave me in the kit and beefed it up with fiber glass. but ive cut so many holes in it its more fiberglass then abs. ran the rcs 140 on it today and it runs awsome and clean, no mess, the plane is way nose heavy though so ill have to shift some battery packs back twards the tail.

I'm finishing up the framing on mine right now. It's an "old" kit. I'm using the Saito 120 mounted at 20° down from horizontal. The engine mounting was a little fussy with exhaust routing and overall length issues. Its all set-up now. I will also have balance issues and will probably have to mount the battery way back in the tail.
I beefed up: ply rib strut tabs, firewall mounting, fuse strut pads, wing saddle, bass block in wing, landing gear mounting. I doubt if I added 3 oz total.
What is the optimum stab incedence? My kit says +1.25 but others are saying to set it a zero.

I actually got mine in a trade about 3 weeks ago. I'm not sure where it was purchased from. I think it was ordered through http://www.hobbyhobby.com/airplanes/price-airplane.htm but I'm not real sure on that.
