Default Top Flite P-47 Gold Ed. in-cowl muffler/header question

Hello everyone,

I will be starting a Top Flite P-47 Gold Ed. kit and plan to put a Super Tigre G-90 2-stroke engine in it (already have it in hand). I want to install an in-cowl muffler in the beast and have consulted top flite's web site for the relevant information.

The problem is, the information given on the Top Flite site and Tower Hobbies' site is conflicting.

Top Flite suggests the TOPQ7915 in-cowl muffer plus the TOPQ7926 header for Super Tigre G-series engines (the 90 in this case).

I consulted the Tower Hobbies website (http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXHY74&P=ML) and they indicate that that in-cowl muffler is "for use on .60-.75 2-Stroke Engines. ** NOT FOR .90 OR LARGER **" and "The muffler is too restrictive for ANY 90 sized engine and will cause overheating problems."

In addition to that, it appears that Tower does not carry the muffler header (TOPQ7926).

Any ideas on what is going on here? And also do any of you have another solution for my SuperTigre G-90 problem?

Thanks,
Zipperneck

Concerning the in-cowl muffler - do you think that it would be possible to simply install a Slimline sport scale muffler ?

Thank to your input.... I would appreciate it.

This would be a better choice.

Thanks for your response.

Yes, I am aware of this muffler but it is for use when the engine is installed on its side, not vertically (upside down).

I had figured to install the engine upside down.... I'll check into this further.

Thanks again.

Zipperneck:
In my Top Flite P-47 I also have a Super Tiger .90, and I'm using This (LXHY74) [link=http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXHY74&P=M]Muffler[/link] with this (LXHY78) [link=http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXHY78&P=ML]Header[/link] from Tower Hobbies. I've managed to get the muffler to stay put. In addition, I've installed a [link=http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXD693&P=7]Dubro remote safety ignitor[/link] because the engine is mounted upside-down and hard to clip the hot-shot to the plug. I mounted it above the right wing, works great!

Thanks for the input Wispybot!
Yes, that is the exact combination of muffler/header recommended for that plane/engine combination by Top Flite. I find it curious that Tower feels that the muffler is too restrictive (Tower: The muffler is too restrictive for ANY 90 sized engine and will cause overheating problems.).

I sent an email to Top Flite about this. We'll see what they have to say. At any rate, it looks like that would be the way to go, and if you say it works fine....

Is any more tubing required between the header/muffler that provided with them? Do I need to order the extension kit?

Thanks again!

PS - good point about the external glow igniitor - I'll have to get a few of those!

Wispybot,
Another thing - what do you mean by: I've managed to get the muffler to stay put.

Was there some problem in that regard?

Because the muffler is not mounted to the engine, the vibration tends to loosen things up, so I built muffler mounts from stacking 1/8" ply about 4X thick to secure the muffler to the firewall. no extra tubing needed, the gap from the header to the muffler is only about 3/16"

This is getting pretty confusing... The Header that Top Flite recommends is the TOPQ7926 (for the ST G90) and it is not listed with Tower - but the header for the STG70 is... which apparently WIspy is using.

Strange. I haven't got an answer back from Top Flite as to the contradicting info on Tower's website.

I want to get my set-up right the first time....

Zipperneck:
The header I've got is [link=http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXHY78&P=ML]TOPQ7925[/link] which fits well, as long as I make sure the engine is not running lean, the engine performs reliably.

Wispy,
Is that because you couldn't find the TOPQ7926? Being a purist, I'd like to find the one made for the engine...

Did you consider the muffler that P47TBOlt mentions above?

Zipperneck;
From my experiance, say a hunch, the difference from the TOPQ7926 and the [link=http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXHY78&P=ML]TOPQ7925[/link] is that the TOPQ7926 is the same header without the tubing, the fitment of this header is correct. Good luck pal

I do know the Top Flight in cowl muffler setup will not work on an OS 90. The engine just flat over heats and dies. Good Luck, Dave

Zipperneck,

Top Flite warns over and over again that the topq7926 and in-cowl muffler should not be used with the G90. It is too restrictive and will cause engine over-heat. That is why I decided on the G75 which will work with the topq7926 and in-cowl muffler. Unfortunately, Top Flite quit making the 7926 header a while ago and at my insistence, Tower quit listing it in their catalog.
The topq7925 will work but you will have to get bolts that will work. I located some bolts
with a company named Fastenal and they have a website. I think you should consider the G75 and you will not have problems with over-heating and it will fit as indicated in the instructions.
I have this setup installed in my H9 60 sized P47 although I had to make a custom setup because the dimensions on this bird are slightly different than the TF P47. I bought the H9 bird as a trainer to help me prepare to fly the TF P47. After all........you spend a lot of time building this bird and you do not want to leave anything to chance.

Hope this helps,
Andy
