RE: GP Patriot 40 Kit Build
I'm basically done. I just need to install the aileron servos and control horns. I think it turned out great. It should be easy to see in the air.

RE: GP Patriot 40 Kit Build
I got everything done and installed except the battery. Currently it weighs 6lbs 9ozs. This seems kind of heavy to me. What weights are typical for this plane?
I just need to install the battery and balance, then I should be ready to test fly. Everything works great. All surfaces move perfectly, and the gear are flawless. I think the covering scheme should be easy to see once it gets airborne. This has been a challenging kit. I just hope the performance is just as impressive.

RE: GP Patriot 40 Kit Build
TOnight I finished everything. I installed the battery and balanced it. I moved the battery to get the balance right. No lead was added. Test flight on SAT. I have asked the "field cameraman" to video the maiden flight.
Here are the final build pics.

RE: GP Patriot 40 Kit Build
THis is a great plane. I thought I might have some performance issues due to the weight, but it flew great. I fueled up and started it up. I made two final needle valve adjustments. I was taching the prop at 15250RPM. This was with my OS-46AX, tuned pipe, 10.5x6 prop, and using 15% fuel. I had good white smoke. I taxied out and lined up for takeoff. The plane tracked very straight down the runway. It was airborne at mid-field. I retracted the gear and made my first turn. It has a wild roll rate. It also wanted to dive. I added some up elevator trim and left aileron. Now it flies straight and level. I made several high speed passes. The pipe sounds awesome. LOUD and overbearing!!
The wind was almost directly down the runway. After about a 5 minute flight, I started lining up for my approach. I dropped the gear. I made the first pass to see how it would slow down......at idle it bleeds off airspeed nicely. I did a go-around and lined up again for final. I had a nice cross-wind as the wind shifted. It came in a 30 degree angle to the center line. Over the runway I straighten it out and feathered the landing. The wheels were tight so it slowed down perfectly.
I'll say it again. This is a great plane, on the ground and in the air. It has plenty of speed when you want it and also flies good at slower speeds. I cant wait to build the Patriot XL.

Thats a Palmer plans 1/12th C-130. Wingspan 132", Length 98". I am building it based on the AC-130U Spectre gunship. It will have a working cargo ramp, onboard cameras, paratroopers, smoke system, working fowler flaps, retracts, all scale lights (Nav, strobe, & landing), 4 engine syncronizer w/onboard glow, and brakes. I think I got all the options. Its approx in its 14th month of construction. Everything is being documented here: http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_4820908/tm.htm.

UkerDuker,,, i am still undecided on my fuel tank, can you tell me what brand fuel tank you used? I know you told me it was 8 oz, but i am trying to fit the 11 oz Hayes tank in mine and it looks tight []

Hummingbird,
I used an 8oz Sullivan tank. You will have to remove some of the balsa from the fuel tank cover to make it fit correctly.

Just be aware, a larger tank will require more "up trim". I had about 6-8 clicks of up elevator to get it to trim out during the maiden. You will probably need more at the beginning of your flights. I guess it will all depend on your engine fuel burn rate.

Hummingbird,
I think I am going to modify my Patriot. I want to add a simple speed break right behind the cockpit. It will be similar to the brake on an F-15.
I'll post pictures when I start.

RE: GP Patriot 40 Kit Build
This plane flies very fast, but I want the option to slow down fast. Here is my solution. I love adding options like this. Here is my first cuts into the upper fuselage. I will use a standard servo so I can adjust the amount braking. I will put the control on my slider bar on my JR9303.

COOOOOOL [sm=thumbs_up.gif]
I never see some like that in a patriot before , if you can take some video once in the air , it will be very nice
Good job UkerDuker

RE: GP Patriot 40 Kit Build
I hope it works. I'm just trying to reduce my approach speed on landing. I simply cut out the brake fairing. I added an additional balsa block on the underside of the fairing. I install a roughed up control-rod that is bent into a slight curve, towards the belly of the aircraft. At the end of the curved control-rod, I screwed on one of the original aileron plastic pivot piece. The control rod was epoxied to a carved out "trench in the bottom of the fairing.
The mechanics consist of another short control rod with the aileron plastic pivot piece connector. This connector is screwed onto the 2nd control-rod. I used a GP easy connector on my servo arm. The servo is a Hitec thin wing metal gear. (HS-125MG). I mounted this to the former. I slid the (2nd) control-rod into the easy connector and made the necessary adjustments. The fairing is deployed and retracted using the slider on the back of my remote, instead of a 2/3 position switch.
TOmorrow I will test fly it to see how effective it is. It should make for some fun flying.
