Default fueling ?

I'm finally finishing an Ace T-34 that I started 17 years ago. I've never built a cowled plane before and am wondering how to fuel the plane without taking of the cowl. It has a 2-line system. Is there some kind of fitting or what have you to put in the fuel line to run outside the cowl? Don't really want to tear into the fuel system as I'm ready to cover and the tank is not accesible without removing sheeting. Thanks in advance. Tom

Thanks MinnFlyer and cornbinder....Didn't know that was what they were for! :stupid: Is there something that keeps the carb from flooding or is that something you live with? Also, are they typically mounted through the cowl? Thanks again Tom

Default fueling ?

I refuse to use a fueling valve. 75% of the plumbing problems encountered at my field can be traced back to a fueling valve. It doesn't matter which brand. I use a three line system. The third line is used for fueling. It can be run out the bottom of the cowling or into a cute fitting that holds it on the side of the cowling. A plug, or "dot" as they have come to be called, is put in the end of the line for running, and removed for fueling. It's very reliable and cheap. If the plug falls out (exceptionally unlikely) the engine will still run without muffler pressure. If you want to un-fuel with the same line, you need to bend the brass tank tube down so that all or most of the fuel can be sucked out.

IMHO

I don't like them either, but in his situation, he doesn't have many options.

Consider a "Y" fueler from Madison Components...1-800-881-9135 or www.qualityrcproducts.com

Thanks tailskid. This might be the simplest of the bunch. But still don't know if these kind of setups create flooding problems. Anyone know about that? Tom

I don't know about the "Y" setup, but the one I pointed you to won't flood the engine.

What do you use to plug the line in the "dot" method? Most of my tanks have optional third line, and I am getting to the point I am not afraid to put the cowling on, engnie runs fine, planes good.

Drill a hole so fuel line squeezes in fairly tight, plug with a ?

Minnflyer,

Do you make them yourself, or are they commerically available?

The fuel dot and three line tank is really the best method in my opinion. It's well worth re-doing your tank installation if you currently have a two line set-up. Thanks for the links Minn.

Default GP Easy Fueler

I have used the Great Planes fueler in all my aircraft with NO problems. I dont know why people are having problems with them. It is a very simple setup and works great for enclosed engines. I would go with this route VS an fueling dot because a dot doesnt stop the flow to the carb like these fuelers do.

Good Luck, Phil (Mesa, AZ)

Used with an 0.S. 46 FX (NO PROBLEMS)
Used with an O.S. 70 Surpass II (NO PROBLEMS)
Used with an O.S. 1.20 Surpass III (NO PROBLEMS)

My problem with them is that I don't have them in all of my planes, and even if I did, not everyone uses them.

So what?

So every time I fuel a plane without one, I take the little fitting off of the fuel line and lose it! (ok, so I'm a klutz) And I'm 2 hours from the nearest good hobby shop to replace it!

MinnFlyer and all...Thanks for all the help. Just one more question. Can you mount the fueler on the firewall and put a dot in the cowl? Thanks, Tom

"Can you mount the fueler on the firewall and put a dot in the cowl?"

You can't run a line from a dot to the fueler because when the fitting is installed in the fueler it cuts off fuel flow to the carb. This is what keeps the engine from flooding when you refuel.

I use fueling valves in all my planes and have yet to have a problem. Great for a cowled engine.

I think we're talking about two different kinds of valves.

Default RE: fueling ?

I know this is an old thread, but can someone walk me through a three line connection for an OS FX 46, with a Dubro fueling valve and a cowled engine. I haven't installed the tank yet so I thought I might as well get it right. The engine is in a Tower Hobbies Voyager and is inverted.

Default RE: GP Easy Fueler

My Great Planes fueler has finally spung a leak, which i think they all will eventualy. it leaks some times when i fuel up and always when I prime the engine by pluging the exhaust. i think the leak is also causing some problems with the engines top end. I plan on replacing it today with a fuel dot.

Default RE: fueling ?

if its a fueling valve it doesnt need a third line. the valve is located on the supply line. the direction on this line is important.

OK, on a two line system -

One line runs from the clunk to the valve, one line runs from the vent to the valve...

Where does the pressure line from the muffler go?
