I would opt for a true 1/4 scale Cub and use the Zenoah G26 etc. Now, if you are stuck on going with the GP .60 Cub, I'd be looking for a 4strk. 1.00-1.25 to put on it. This will fly the Cub very scale like and give you good power too should you need it down low. The thing to remember with Cubs is to coordinate your turns with rudder. Don't get too slow and in too steep of a bank or it will spin in on you!!

BTW, I'd say that the .65LA would be seriously lacking on this bird.............I also can't believe that someone would suggest you put a 26cc gasser on it either!
Yup. A choice needs to be made. If the OP is hung up on buying a gasser, the GP Cub really isn't suitable. If he's hung up on buying the GP Cub, a 4 stroke is a far better choice.

> Hi Guys,
I just read all the posts here and enjoyed it a lot. I'd just picked up a used flying GP 60 Cub. It is powered with a Saito 72 four cycles and the previous owner had mounted a 600 grams lead wt. right on to of the up side down motor. Total wt. is 6.25 kg. (14 lb.) the cub balances on the 4.25" point from LE. my question is : Is it normal to need so much wt. up front to balance this cub? I plan on replacing the Saito with an OS 90 FS.
Thanks for the help
Solly

Does a j3 piper cub need that much weight to balance?

The model needs whatever it takes to put the balance point in the correct location. The plane flies well up to about 12 pounds max weight. Lighter is better, but you must balance it correctly or you won't be flying well at all.

Thanks Bill, Since I purchased mine used and plan on replacing the old 70fs with a new 90fs I happen to have. My question is what is the std. size fuel tank that comes with the kit? The tank in my J3 seems small.
Thanks

I flew my GP CUB 60 with a Saito 125 at first then switched to a DLE 20 and the 20 was by far the better choice. Perfect balance with either engine with no additional weight required. The DLE easily fits in the cowl when coupled with a wrap around Pitts muffler. This airframe eats power like no other CUB I've flown (probably the thick, draggy wing airfoil) and it is in no way overpowered with these engines. The same engine gives better performance in a full size SIG 1/4 CUB for comparison. The plane is covered with Solartex with one coat of clear for sealant against stains. Vinyl N# with no other frills. The smaller fuel tank mounts back towards the CG and the ignition box easily fits behind the firewall in the fuselage where the tank would be on the glo version. This plane will be for sale shortly in the Buy & Sell ads as I rarely fly this plane with other larger CUBs around to choose from. Overall, it is a good airframe but if pressed, I'd probably recommend one of the SIG kits over this kit.
