I recently upgraded my UltraSport 40 powertrain from an OS 46SF ringed (a really nice engine) with a JBA 56 with a tuned pipe (MACs Quiet pipe). Wicked performance. I had to add more colors to the plane to make it more visible. i plan to strip and recover the whole plane this coming winter with a more visible scheme. I will be looking at pictures here to get some finish ideas.
The US40 with the JBA 56 and pipe is insanely fast.

Question for the room :
is it worth the extra 200 $ for a tuned pipe setup, or do I just go with a Pitts style or other generic muffler,
my flying style is nothing crazy , just trying to hold pattern sequences .
Engine is a moki 140 glow .
open for any ideas thoughts comments concerns .
stoner.

Some people will pay $200 for an extra 2mph of seed, while others demand more speed for their money.
In the end, you simply have to try it out to find out if it's worth it.

It is called a tuned pipe because it is tuned to a certain rpm range. Most pipes are tuned to high rpm. That means that the engine will run better (faster) at that rpm. It also means that the engine will run worse/slower at all other rpms. I'm sure you have heard people talk about "coming onto the pipe". The engine will run rough and appear sluggish until it reaches the tuned rpm and then suddenly scream.
So if you fly at full throttle all the time and want all the speed you can get from the engine you have, and don't mind the time consuming problem of tuning the pipe to an rpm that the engine will actually turn, then get the pipe.
If you want to vary your throttle settings during flight, you won't like the pipe. If you need more vertical, use less pitch and more diameter in the prop or get a bigger engine.

I bought a new set of E Flite Electric retracts to replace the old electric ones . The new ones can accept struts so I also bought a set of Robart struts . The new retracts work much better than the old ones and now with the struts my gear bending problems are over . Now my Ultra Sport is a lot of fun . The new Retracts aren't quite drop in but nothing a dremel can't fix . They are maybe 1/16" wider than the old ones . You need 3/8" struts for them .

As a matter of fact I am a very big fan of Magnum engines, the Magnum 52 is a very strong engine and once your past the last stage of break in that 52 is so easy to use and run, not to mention that the only glow engines you can buy new from a hobby shop or online like Tower and Hobby People and few others is OS, Magnum, SK, Saito, Jett, ASP and perhaps a few others that Im sure I'm missing. Super tigre is as everyone know is no longer in production and getting parts will be interesting for the parts seeker. Back in the day my dad and I developed a technique to get super tigre to run really well and so who ever bought one had me or my dad get it set up for the owner so they can have reliable runs! Super Tigre were always to me considered cheap bolt on power houses and I can only wonder if the will ever come back but since they have not been in production for the past 3 years it could be safe to say that Super Tigres will never come back.

My big lament with these glow engines that are no longer in production is the lack of replacement piston rings or piston/liner sets. Those are wear items that will need replacement sooner or later. No issues with bearings, those are easily available. It seems like a good business opportunity for somebody to make and sell piston rings and even piston/liner sets to modelers for the next several years.
