I've got mine stripped down now as well for a re-covering. I'm learning a valuable lesson about using cheap covering material. The white I used for the base color was Tower's econocoat. What a mistake that was. Not only did it turn a brownish color in the sun it also allowed fuel to seep through. I should have realized that was happening when some areas started to turn pink. The result was that the entire nose from the firewall forward and the chin block back to the wing saddle had to be cut off due to soaked balsa wood. Even the light ply sub-structure in the bottom of the fuel tank compartment is fuel soaked. I'm tempted to scrap the whole fuselage and build a new one.
Oh well, at least it's building season.

This one works well on the 60 size, maybe it's large enough for the 1000 size. I think it is 14 inches wide.

Another possibility is an aluminum landing gear from a 1/4 scale Extra 300. I had such a fixed gear a couple of years ago that I gave away. It was very thick, about 5/16 thick and about 16 in. wide and about 6 or 7 in. tall. Not sure where I got it but I would bet that such a fixed gear would work for the US 1000. Here's a few ideas that might work.

In my building opinion you want to fuel proof the engine compartment after you are done with the covering job that way the covering is "glued down" with the lightely thinned down 30 minute epoxy. The fuel comparement should have been fuel proofed during the construction of the fuse before the top block was glued on and sanded to shape to the spinner.

Finally got my re-covering finished tonight. Very close to what it was originally with a couple of minor changes. Some of the Brotherhood members will recognize the scheme, hope I did it justice.
Next step will be to fuel-proof every bit of exposed wood before re-assembling the plane. I would like to lay my hands on a pair of the 1" tall Ultra Sport 60 decals that came with the kit. If anyone has a set their not using I would be happy to buy them from you. Not the whole decal set, just the two 1" tall "Ultra Sport 60" decals.
Still need to make a set of gear doors for the retracts.

Got the Ultra Sport out to the field today for it's re-maiden. Was a very windy and gusty day. I only flew it once and had a very hard time getting it back down safely. Took 4 or 5 approaches before I finally got it down. Flight ended with an embarrassing nose over at the end of the field. My friend and flying buddy Mark got some nice pictures though.

Hello, is the Brotherhood still open to join. I'm new here and I am nearly done with my US60 build. First one in about 30 years. Have a YS61 long stroke and a Macs header with a hitori pipe, Robart air retracts and robo struts.
