Default ARF wing mouting style

Hello guys.

I have a CG Ultimate kit to build as my next projetc. I will try to make the upper wing mouting the same way as the ARF version.

Does anyone knows if the kit cabane could be used to do that? The ARF cabane goes a little into the wing and maybe the kit version is a little small for that pourpose. If I have to make new cabane, what kind of aluminum should I get?

If anyone did that, is there some "how to" to be followed?

Thanks.

I can't speak to how you'd modify the upper wing mount, but as far as acquiring the aluminum (if you'd have to make a new cabane), those strips can be found at most home improvement stores...Lowe's, Home Depot, etc in the same width and thickness. Very easy to bend a new set, as I've done this for a Midwest Super Stinker that had a broken cabane some years ago.

Vvolgelm1 you just had to mention a super stinker lo ! I have been trying to make up my mind between getting a cg ultimate ready to fly first or a super stinker that i have stripped and repaired . My cg ultimate is in great shape but the monokote is very brittle from age and i think i am going to have to strip and recover it 😔

Tough decision, right? Either plane will be worth the covering tune-up. I have another Super Stinker 'stashed' in my kit collection that's been tempting me for the past couple years. I think next winter it will come off the shelf lol.

It's been along time since I posted last.
Finally finished my CG Ultimate and it flies great! Mods: DLE 20, 2 servos in lower wing, upper wing attached with bolts, ele. servoes in the rear, beefed-up N-strut attachment points, beefed-up ribs at outer wing struts, fuel tank moved over cg, alum lndg gear.
If I can figure out posting pics I'll do that next.

Default Top wing mount

Hey guys, so I started and that's how I am going to do the top wing mount.

Searching around, I figured out that the easiest way to mout the wind is the Dave Patrick Ultimate way. Only two leaps out othe top wing to atach the cabane.

So my point was doing that way keeping the Carl Goldberg wing joint system. So I came up whit this center rib.

I will let the lips cutting to when I have the fuse framed up and the cabane bolted on to not make any mistakes.

Any thougths about it?

Seems to be OK with those front and rear reinforcements.

From your previuos post and photos, where only central reinforcement was visible, I should have suggested to beef that up with vertical grain webs from #2 ribs to central ones and infill the reinforcement with a solid balsa triangle block so as to not rely only on the CTP triangles.

Now with the front and rear CTP reinforcements between #2 ribs and from top to bottom sheeting I think you have a pretty safe top wing.

Best Regards.

You guys are making nice improvements to the old kit! Keep up the good work.

I hope to be flying the pants off mine which i completed back in 1992...it is the last kit I ever built. ARFs just got too good after that. Anyway, I had not been flying it too much the last couple years as the bearings in the original OS FS-120 SurpassE were making the plane sound like a farm tractor in the air. And I have lots of other planes to fly, so the Ultimate just sat and rested. Last week I finally removed the engine from the airframe and tore it apart. Got some new bearings at the local McGuires bearing shop, and reassembled the engine. Looking forward to flying the plane again next week, and much more often after that! Will post some new pics of the old bird when I get her to the field. Jon

PS in the meantime here is a video of the plane from six or seven years ago for the newer members of the brotherhood who have not seen it.

I got the Ultimate up for two flights this morning. Sounds strong and flies great with the new bearings in the OS 120 SurpassE. It still flies nice and straight like I remember. I kept throttle up for landings and had two nice ones. Here are two pics from this morning, still looks about the same as the first day i flew it 26 years ago, except for the worn out ABS cowl, which you cannot see well at a distance, lol. Jon

Sorry it has been so long since I last posted but I see that the brotherhood is still alive and well ! I lost all my RCU info when my old phone took a crap and the site would not let me use my old user name of Tim Allen so now I am pittscrazy lol . I am almost done with my super stinker and have been eyeing 3 cg planes one of which is my ultimate . I put my cg decathlon in about a week ago due to a failed elevator servo and it is now waiting for it's turn on the bench . My other cg plane is the extra 300 . I love the way Carl Goldberg planes fly and can't wait to have all three going to the field with me again . I have decided to use a supre tigre 90 on the ultimate , I have a os 110 alpha in my decathlon and it flew great ! The extra will get my Ys 140L 😂 but the ultimate goes up next !

Default New top wing design

Hello guys.

So some posts ago I said I was trying to replicate the Dave Patrick top wing mouting.

I have wood and aluminum 6063 to make a third wing and another set of cabanes. I also have around a borrowed CG Ultimate ARF version to get some mesurements from. This ARF has a bad shape covering and some holes allowed me to see how the top wing center is made out. I could not see the whole thing, but enough to figure.

Now I am making a new top wing based on the ARF version.

The pic I'm attachig shows how the mouting is going. I will use (though the ARF wing does not have it) the same main reinforcement the kit has at the center ribs next to the main spar (thats why you see a cut on the mounting base), but I will not have space to make the front and the rear reinforcements. Anyway, I think I can get rid of them cuz the main plywood piece do the same trick.

So what to you guys think? Any ideas to make it stronger or does it seem strong enough?

I want to have this set for the next buildings. The idea is been capable to replicate as much ARF versions I want.

BTW, the two central ribs are made out of plywood as well. I will use plywood for the two firs sheer webs too.

Regards.

Ed.

Hello everyone.
I did the maiden flight of my newly finished Goldberg Ultimate this friday. It flew well. No trim was needed. My flying session was cut short by a thunder storm, so I only managed one flight before I had to go home. The air was very bumpy before the thunder storm, but it felt a little nose heavy. I will have to wait for calmer conditions to sort it out.
I was planning on posting some pics, but aparently I have to make 10 forum posts before I can post pics so the pics have to wait.

My Ultimate has O.S Brushless motor. Zippy 6s 5000 mAh battery. One Hitec servo for each control surface. Removable top hatch/canopy for easy battery changes. It weighs 3,9 kg or 8,6 lbs.

I hope this qualify me for membership of this now world wide brotherhood.

Regards
Gunnar

Hi Gunnar,

Sorry for delay but I am on holiday with my elderly mother and I am afraid I do not have good Internet access and do not enter here frequently since mid July. Of course you are most welcomed and #133 is your brotherhood number!.

I would like to let you know you may write a firm in your RC Universe profile and include your brotherhood identification as most we do.

We wish you to reach 10 post as soon as possible so you may show us your electric CG Ultimate.

For every other new friend visiting this thread who should like to enter the Brotherhood, please, just ask for it!.

Best Regards.

You will love the plane! Looks like an OS 120 FS same vintage as mine. Mine ain’t fast but she pulls well and sounds great after 26 years of flying. Good luck with yours and tell us how it goes! Going to take mine to the field today btw! Jon
