thanks mark! this will be a great help, we just looked at the peaces compairing it to my US60. i'm abit concerned about the Landing gear mounts 1/8 lt ply backed up by balsa, we plan to add a 1/8 marine ply to the top of the balsa and use screws that can reach it all.

as for dihedral my US60 is very close to what this has, i removed half my dihedral to make it more patern like.

my US60 has a Turnagy sk3 5065-320 on 6s5k25c turning a 12x12apce. not the best setup but the motor i wanted was unavailable at the time, so i run in second gear. this will get a NTM 4260-500 on the same battery and probubly step back on the prop to 12x10 but we have to go through the numbers first. he may be able to go 5s w 12x12, just don't know at this point.

two flights on mine today in winds as high as 30mph. i finally realized why its so windy here this year. its an election year!

Hi Joe, are you sure it is balsa under the ply on those mounts? I have checked mine and they are hardwood bearers running between the wingribs, and appear quite strong, I am considering fitting e-flite electric retracts, I will be using a separate lipo receiver battery (mounted as far forward as possible and wish I could get it under the cowl but will be too tight) regulated to 6v which would power the retracts also if I use them as I already have a Hacker opto BEC,what setup do you go with? I think I will squeeze my BEC under the cowl, I am also tempted with this Taipan to try a tru turn electric cooling spinner but haven't decided on that either at this point,,I am not rushing this project as it is a good early winter project down here plus it will take me two weeks alone to decide on a covering scheme as par for the course with me! haha! Hey If you get yours in the air first can you give me a flight report??

i'm glad to here the mounts are a good wood i just looked ar them. poking them with a knife comes when we get there( putting the lg in). we may put retracts in but but ultra sports job is to fly when weather is crappy so we keep it simple, atleast on this one. the one my sone is building from a kit has flaps and retracts, but the taipan will be a always fly plane.

my US60 had 1200+ flights on alcohal before switching to electric so it has a big hole it the side of the cowl so i stuck the speed control there. for this one we will probubly velcro the speed control to the bottom of the cowl or fuse behind the cowl where we can resess it a bit. if it needs cooling we use the little plastic pill trays that claritin-d comes in mounted right behid the prop. left unpainted they have worked great, if they get crushed they just pull right back out. mine lands stone cold because everything is not beeing stressed by the prop. and cant go bigger without longer landing gear and mine are already longer than stock, so any more length will trquire addtng more stress bearring members in the wing.

i flew mine yesterday, the wind was realy gusty at the field, calmn at my house. i put two flights on her i had forgotten this was the last plane on 72mhz. i keep upgrading it to dsm but my stylus just flys it better. i thinkk its just been so well rung out on the stylus, where with a new radio i would have months of flying in all conditions to equal the triming. i flew backwards a couple of times.

this looks to tak a smaller than std servo for Elevator. what did you use?

Joe

paladin 05-27-2014 05:03 AM

well its still windy here so i flew the ultrasport for 2 more flights. my initial flight count was high, once i checked the flight log i put flight 1078 and 1079 on it yesterday. i cant get over how rock solid this plane is in the wind. i hope the tiapan is the same.

I too went flying yesterday in windy conditions. I agree, the US is a very rock solid flying plane. With the Minnflyer modifications and flaps, it is the most stable plane in my hangar. I love it.

Finally got the maiden flight done on my US 40, all went well, no suprises. It was fairly windy but as we know it was rock solid and even landed better with a 3 point landing with a one foot roll out. When I tried the flaps it ballooned, so when I got home I programed in 4% down elevator. Can't wait till next outing.

both of you did great jobs, but i have to ask.

both of you guys have sharp points in your trim, star burst and stars. did you do anything to keep them from lifting up when you kleen the plane after flying?

i have some clear covering the i put on those areas to keep them down. of coarse it is not completely clear so im always looking for a way to handle sharp points in trim?

Hi Joe, No I just try to iron down or trim solvent down the point as best I can, sometimes they stay, sometimes not. I have in the past rounded out the point to about a 1/4 radius but I don't think this makes a huge difference.

http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/atta...mentid=1999926http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/atta...mentid=1999927

You can see the trim solvent bleeds the color. Back in the 90's I used too wet out the entire strip with not much bleeding, not sure if formulation changes have made it worse or if some colors just run more than others. Here I used the windex method and sealed the edges with trim solvent.

Ya, my US60 needed a fuse recover 8 years ago because it was just wrinkled and would not iron out anymore. now it is just coming unglued at the seams, just looses its sticky (maybe they reduced the amount of color/sticky layer they aply. thats just the fuse, the wings 1986 monokote is holding up nicely.

when i do a star burst i do it like a WWII japanes flag. run all the points to one spot then put a sun over them and that works pretty well.

good luck with those points!

Clear fingernail polish works pretty well for me when I remember to do it.

Good luck on maiden make sure you give a report on trim adjustments on your transmitter and the performance of the engine!

murtagh 06-02-2014 11:17 AM

Maiden post poned due bad weather:mad:
PS: the engine is a brand new OS MAX 75 AX...

Calvinman 06-02-2014 12:19 PM

Darn weather, should fly like a banshee with a 75 on her!

That's going to be a sweet flying plane with a 75 on it. All of my Ultra Sports have had 60's on them and they had plenty of power on them!!

paladin 06-03-2014 06:40 AM

your vertical should be better but you will have to carry more prop. pitch to get the same horizontal speed as a 60 cause the 75 top rpm's are lower.

Joe

murtagh 06-03-2014 09:53 AM

Thanks a lot, my friends for your comments. About the prop size, I started with an APC 13x6 (only for break-in) and I am planning to do the maiden with a 13x9. What do you think about ? Pitch 9 is too much ?

More pitch means higher speed, but slower acceleration and less vertical authority. There are also very good arguments in favor of breaking the engine in with the prop you are going to fly it on. The pitch speed of a 13x9 on that 75 will be somewhere around 160-190 kph. Of course you could fly it at 2/3 throttle, but acceleration would be pretty sluggish from there. I think you would be happier with a prop speed of 125-135 kph, with much better overall performance. That would require a 13x7 or 14x6.

Unless of course you want your UltraSport to be as fast as possible. In that case, a 12x9 would be even faster. ;)

This was my previous US 60 with a old Supertigre 75 (made in Italy, not China). Unfortunatelly I destroyed it last year, probably due a rx switch fail (any response to tx).

Thanks Jim for your interesting suggestion. I like fly "as fast as possible" and, sure, I will try the 12x9 prop. Maiden postponed to next sunday..

paladin 06-03-2014 12:06 PM

i had to bend new gear to fit a 13 inch diameter prop.. but we have really tall grass so that may be fine for short grass or black top.
(pitch * rpm)=mph

so:
11000rpm = 93.75 mph
10500rpm = 89.5
10000rpm = 85.2
9500rpm = 81.0

the prop will slip so actual speed will be 5 to 8 mph lower. I think that is the us60's sweet spot.

i Have a new in the box us1000 i am planing to build it soon, and as i build i will trace out any ribs or formers or any part thats needs to be cut out . This way i can build another one if needed. I have the us 60 from back in 1997 and still flying it i love this planes cant wait to build the 1000 and install a gas engine

paladin 06-05-2014 06:28 AM

mike, fyi the us1000 prototype had a 72-74 inch wing span and GP added 2 wing bays to make it imaa leagle. they did nothing with the fuse and it was still a great flying plane but just did not do stall manuvers as easily as the us60, in my opinion.

still a great flying plane though

Joe
