"ML Spattern"
I have been toying with the Idea of building a Spad pattern plane. Acam had also mentioned doing it. I would love to fly it at a competition and beat some of those $2500+ planes! Attached are pictures of my prorotype fuse and wing taped together. The fuse will have foam formers in it, like the one in the picture, where the turtle deck starts. I may move the gutterpipe motor mount former up a little bit, so it will be in the center line of the fuse. I will probably do a plug in wing design of some sort. The wing is slightly swept and it will have a tapered airfoil. I will be using foam ribs in it, to give me the tapered airfoil (bigger at the root and smaller at the tip). The fuse and the one wing weighs 2.5 lbs. as you see it. Granted there will be more weight added do to the addition of formers and such. If it turns out to be a good design and flier, I will start a build thread with detailed photos. Since There is a spad already named "Spattern" I dub this one "ML Spattern"

I would love a set of plans for this. I wuold like to build a scaled down version that I could fly in the firld behind my house. I already fly a small rail spad with a .25 bb motor on it back there but I would like something that looks more like a plane. I can't wait to see the finished product!!!

Hey, that looks good. I hope you see this one to the end. Thats my problem,I start a project then lose interest and give up on it. I really want to build a Spad Ultimate,but I just can't get the motivation to start. I have the whole project figured out in my head but that is as far as I got. Just keep us all updated on your progress.

I incorparated some of the things I learned from building my two spad Extras (i.e. part of the fuse, turtle deck, etc..) It is neat how you can apply techniques learned from other spad builders, to your own designs. It may be a little while before I finish this one. I'm having to much fun flying my 31cc Ryobi UltraSpadStick.
On its maiden flight, the needles were set very rich and I was using a MAS 18X6 prop, the power output sucked[:'(]. It was all it could do just to stay aloft (very slow). So I changed the prop to a wood 18X8 zinger and tinkered with the needles, which gave me 700 more rpm. Man did it come alive. Still lacks in the vertical department (about 100 to 150 ft. before it stalls), but it is really fun to fly. I'm going to try an 18X8 APC next, when the LHS gets some in. The Ryobi engine is actually quiter than some of my two stroke nitro engines.

It is funny you say that, our club had it's unusual aircraft fun fly, yesterday (08/20/05) and all the cars and the ambulance flew except one car (it was too nose heavy), . We hope to have all 8 cars and the ambulance in the air at one time, at my club's labor day air show this year.
Once it is over, and after the spad fun fly here in Omaha on September 10, things around here should calm down a bit, so I can finish the "ML Spattern".
As I mentioned before, I'm having a lot of fun with the 31 cc USS. I installed a $30.00 smoke system in it yesterday before going to the fun fly. The smoke set up is cheap already without using a 9 dollar winshield pump which would be to heavy for the planes I fly. Having said that I don't understand why they cant develope a servo that is a switch already to eliminate using both a servo and a seperate switch ? I mean for the love of PETE this isn't rocket science.

Most of you probably thought this thread was dead. Well I have been on the foamy kick lately, and have given building spads a break. Wait a minute, foamies are considered spads to aren't they? Attached are photos of my progress on the ML Spattern. Still trying to work out a plug in wing design. Anyway, by what factor do you think I should multiply this to power it with a .40 class engine?

I have a new ringed OS.61RF, fitted with the fuel pump, 86 carb and tuned pipe, like the Hanno special, just waiting for a SpadPattern ship[8D]

Been burning the candle at both ends lately, I'm in the process of designing and kitting a few Professional Series Foamies. I just received my first Depron laser cut kit yesterday. It turned out nice, but I have already made changes to it, to increase the quality and performance of the kit.

Well I finally made some time to work on the ML Spattern. I still have a little bit of work left, but I see no reason why it will not be finished, and test flown a few times before Spadfest 06. The plug in wings was the hardest part in the whole design. Finally it hit me one day, and this is what I have finshed so far (see attched photos). I will upload a few more photos in the next post.
Photos #1 through #7 Wing Spars with heavy duty package wrapping paper for wing tube sleeves. I made the Spars like an I-beam, with the tube sleeves epoxied in place. They are also tapered and the wings will be swept.
Photo #8 Shows the inside of the fuse where the wing tube is inserted. It is made from CA soaked Fiberglass and epoxied in place.
Photo #9 shows the fuse tube slot.
Photo #10 Wing tube inserted in Fuse slot.
Photo #11 and #12 The wings mocked up, I still haven't glued the spars in place yet.

Next, I will be finishing up the wings, by adding a root insert with wing bolts and wing alignment dowels. Then I will be moving on to Vacuum form the canopy and Fiberglass the cowl plug. I'll add more photos as I go.
