Dave, it's hard to tell from the pic, how are the formers lined up while building the fuse? It really doesn't look like the typical box core construction.

This from my own plans based on data files Albatros special. It is essentially my 1/3rd scale reduced in size with slightly changed structure. Bhole, you are correct as it is a actual monocoque(sp) construction. The formers are slid onto a square piece of Al tube on temporary cross pieces and once about 2/3rds of the sheeting is on, the tube is removed. there is a 1/8th ply box built into the nose which ties the firewall, struts and landing gear together. Very very light and strong.

Ah, the penny just dropped! I'm definitely looking forward to developments! Using the broom in the background as scale, it looks like this something around 1/5 scale?

1/4 scale. 88" wingspan. Power will be a Fuji 43. A bit much but I will be able to swing a large prop. I project the weight to be 18-19 pounds.

That looks like the perfect way to build a DV or Pfalz -- or any of the "rigid body" WWI aircraft. There's a simplicity and elegance to this method that's very appealing.
While I love the lines of the Albatros (and the Pfalz even more so) I can't help feeling that the it is the least WWI of all the WWI aircraft. It's the WWI equivalent of the WWII "heavy metal" warbird. Maybe that partially explains its popularity with modelers. Well that and those GREAT color schemes! Maybe it's just the old "stick 'n tissue" builder in me, but I just love those fabric-covered fuses.

I would not call it the least. In fact it is the plane that kept the Germans ahead most of the war, and its production was only halted because Fokker convinced the government that his DVII was what was needed and the government ordered Albatros to make DVIIs. Fokker was a good salesman as much as an aircraft builder and made his planes available to the top pilots for testing so they could influence the selection at bid time. I think they would have kept up with the times if they would have been allowed to keep building their aircraft, and it was pretty much a match for the DVII as is and was flown to the end of the war. The Red Baron made good use of it with about 60 of his kills in the plane.

The Albatros had its wing failures, but the Dr1,DVII, and DVIII did too and were removed from service for times because of manufacturing defects in the wings. I like both the Fokkers and the Albatros' they were both great. I think one reason Von Richthofen did not fly the Va much was that he was recovering form this wounds during its main usage. He is also one who had the bottom wing of his DIII come off.
On another note, I saw Dave's DV at last years Mint Julip and it was awesome.

I have a Proctor kit that's waiting in the wings to be built.

As for the DVa, something in me likes the DIII better. But I don't like the idea of having to sheet a WWI model -- which is what I'll have to do if I do the Albatros CI so I get I better get used to the idea. []

Looks good! Any chance that you'll make the plans available?

Wow! I think you are going to have the DVa done before my DIII, and I had a seven month head start! Please be sure to show us your aileron servo set-up when you get to that. Thanks!
