RE: Albatros DVa
Dave,
Okay thanks for the input. I'll get some stronger servos in there. My wing has the scale airfoil, so it's a little thinner, but I think I can move the servo further forwardto the thicker part of the wing. Do you have a picture of how the control cable exits the wing on a DV? What does the control hookup look like on the aileron. The plans I'm using are for a DVa so I don't have that detail.
Thanks,
Martin

Ok more progress at last. I finally tackled shaping the cowl to fit the cylinders of the dummy engine. I also did some work on the exhaust to make it
fit over the spark plug. Opened up the front of the cowl for cooling. Still have a bit of work to do on the cowl.

Well, I finally got over my depression at finding a major discrepency in my documentation and fixed the paint to match the new photo I had found. As suspected, it was major anti-fun. But now it's done!! i will start installing all the little cockpit gizmos now.

Dave,
This morning I stuck the elevator onto the stab and discovered the fabric has made the gap too small. The surface does not fit right anymore. Too much gap at the trailing edge. The part of the elevator that sticks forward of the hinge line rubs on the stab. Of course I forgot to allow for the covering when I set the gap so now I have to sand off some of the elevator and recover the edge. Not as traumatic as what you faced but a pain never the less. I think I had a large enough gap for the ailerons but now I am afraid to mount them and look. I have to pay more attention to what I am doing. I hate having to fix mistakes.

more progress. Ailerons are finished. Stab and elevator are covered in Koverall and have 2 coats of Nitrate. Stitching, tapes and a couple more coats of dope and I can glue them on the airplane.

Tons got done on Sunday! Painted the cowl, all metal panels and the radiator. Also finished up fixinging the goof. Took about 3X longer than the first time. Painted a bunch of cockpit pieces. Once i get the tank in if someone put a gun to my head and said fly, I could live. I will post pictures shortly. A cyber cigar to whoever points out what I changed!

RE: Albatros DVa
Got the ailerons mounted on the top wing. They could have come out better. They bind a bit and the gap is not as clean as I would have liked. But with a bit of lube they may be all right as is. Also cut out most of the holes in the wing for bolts and such. Cant find the hole for the rear v strut bracket. It got late last night and I gave up. I know its there.
The engine control servos are in and I have monkeyed around with the linkage. I also got the ply doubler in the area of the nose where the exhaust exits the bottom of the plane put in. It is only 1/16 but will suffice to keep the sheeting from getting messed up and to support the exhaust. I was thinking of using epoxy for this but in the end I slathered the medium CA around and was done in a couple of minutes. The thin ply bends nicely and I was able to make it conform to the curved sheeting. It looks rather nice. Too bad nobody will ever see it. I also removed the spring return on the throttle on the carb. I destroyed it in the process. The spring returns the throttle to idle if the linkage lets go. It isnt going to let go and I dont want the spring loading up my servo.
So there it is. I will post pictures soon. I just have not had time to take any. I have a choice, take pictures or build. I really want this plane done and off the board so I can start on the next thing. I also want to fly this thing. It is time to be done.
Cheers,
Dave

Hey Del, that is the sad truth indeed. We'll all get through it one way or another. When are you going to start posting another build?

Got the crosses painted on the bottom wings. They came out rather nice I think. Pictures tell the story. The pictures are fuzzy because I dont use flash.
Turns out my ailreon problem was a non-problem. I took the top wing over to Dave J and got the expert opinion. The ailerons dont bind too much and the gaps are just fine. I feel better.

Nice crosses! Turned the bevels and housings for our gauges this morning. faces are done and will cut lenses tonight. Jim, i gave Dave a pile of materials for you as your paths seem to sross more often. Dave suggested that you, Greg E, Dave and myself get together for a he-man WW1 guy meeting next weekend.

More progress, I am boxing in the engine compartment so I dont get goo all over the inside of my plane. Dave J did this too. I built a little compartment for the ignition electronics and ran some fuel tube. I also got the rudder and elevator servos in. Lots of wires and tubes everywhere. I made a small drain tube for the bottom of the engine compartment and a fuel tank vent farther back. All of this was after Dave J did the same.
I have also been working on the cowl and the cabane struts. The cowl is giving me problems getting the contour right. I have smoe small ridges that I chase around with bondo and putty. I fill and smooth one area and the problem moves to another. The struts are finished and ready for paint though. I finally got all the little dents and stuff out of them. At least I think I did. Anyway, taking a short break to post some pictures.

DJ, I would like very much to get together with you guys. I have some Ideas I’d like to run by you. I’m looking at trying to make a more scale elevator control. I did find a picture from the aerodrome site; a gentleman is building a full scale Spad XIII and has posted his pictures. It maybe a little more trouble than what it would be worth? I’ll post one picture for you to see, you probably already know what it looks like but I had never seen one before. Anyway maybe after Toledo, we could all get together? Thanks for letting me read some of your books. I have learned so much from them, I've even ordered a book written by Capt Biddle. I'm hooked big time now. Take care. Jim

Here are some Cockpit parts and shots. Quality of pix is not so hot, I was in a hurray (as always) and didn't check em. You'll get the gist thow. The cruddy looking glue joit in the cockpit will be covered by the dash plates. the throttle cable, firing wires and control cables are not attached yet. The stick is fully articulating as the original.
