I'm interested in buying one of the Nitroplanes Lancair 360 MK2 planes, and I'm wondering if it would be possible to run an OS max FL70 4 stroke in it. By that I guess I'm asking how much prop clearance is there? That engine uses a 12" to 13" prop.

I'm putting one together with an MDS68.

It appears to be about 8.5" ground clearance to the prop shaft so even a 13 inch prop should be ok.

Overall it looks pretty good for an inexpensive ARF.

Getting a wider engine entailed making clearance in the motor mount so it could go against the the upper nose gear block with clearance to get at the collar holding it in place. The engine is a tight fit and I'll probably have to cut up the cowl quite a bit.

I expect to have assembly done in a couple more days.

Some things I noticed in the construction.

Need to make clearance in the motor mount for the nose gear on an MDS 68 or any large engine
Dont forget the 2 washers under the left side holes of the motor mount to get the thrust (not built into firewall)
CMP measurement for face of prop to firewall too large - measure first - I have more than 1/4" gap - I'll leave it for now
With the large engine I needed tail weight so I cantelevered the 2100 NiMH 5 cell pack off the back of the servo tray in the middle of the Fuse with a Lowes paint stirrer - this will reduce need for dead weight in the plane - at 70mm will target 72 - 75 from leading edge by adding a little more weigt to the stirrer.
Trying TowerPro Digital (they call them digital) w/995 MG - better than expected for $13 ea.
Put the nose wheelpants on before putting the gear on the plane.
Zap a Dap a Goo works well for Front wheelpants components as well as rear windows (dont use old glue in a 40 degree garage)
Replace the wing screws with 1/4 - 20 nylon - ease of replacement
Elevate the rudder servo further and cris cross the rudder pull pull wires to get the right exit angles as well as the rudder matching the correct steering direction
Make rod standoffs for steering and throttle servos as appropriate - did not use one on the rigid (CF) elevator rod

What a slick looking plane! Thanks for the pics and the construction advice. That cowl really hides the engine well, doesn't it? So you think it'll cool ok? I hope so, that's really clean....
I'm hoping to get one on the way before too long.

please let me know how it flies, I've been reading posts on here about the CG being off (aft) as indicated on the plans, and the nose gear being a little weak. Everyone loves the way it flies though...

Hey guys thought I would chime in on this little gem. I have the stars and stripes version. First off this is a sweet flying plane and very responsive. I run a GMS .61 in mine and it hauls a@@. Landings are a little hot so be prepared. The plane is so aerodynamically clean that it takes a long time to bleed off speed. Just make a longer landing approach than normal and you will be fine. The plane comes in extremely nose heavy when using the .61 size motor so a lot of weight had to be added to the rear. I will post pictures. He is right about the distance from the engine backplate to the firewall. It is way off. I also have 1/4" gap and it looks ugly but I am going to leave it because it would require rebalancing. I can save you both the trouble of rebending the front landing gear, just replace it now. Way too weak. I fly off grass and it is cut extremely short and the wheel pants had to go. That sucked because they look sweet. If you insist on using the stock front gear and the wheel pants the first time it bends it will crack the bottom of the fuse. Ask me how I know. Once you get her trimmed out it is an awesome sight in the air. Very fast and nimble. Rolls can be very fast if you choose and loops can be as well. If you want to know the measurements of the control surface movements that I have just let me know. I can try to answer any more questions that you think of. Good luck on the maidens. One more thing I almost forgot. On take off the plane actually sticks to the ground. You have to fly this one off. Be careful because at takeoff speeds it can get squirrley as she has a short wheelbase. I flipped a couple of times figuring this out. RCU won't let me upload pics. I will try later.

Based on your experience, i'll probably use the current nose gear for show and drop in a spare Fults (dual leg) nose setup for flying.

Ths CG issue and the nosegear being weak were the two most prevalent concerns I've been able to find so far. When I get mine I'll take care of the nosegear before I do anything else. I would really like to install one of those nosewheel brake setups that Dubro makes (or used to make, I can't find 'em), it was sweet, worked great. Sure makes the runway 'longer'. I keep reading that retracts are not possible on this bird, but we'll see.....
Anyway,I'd love to see it.

I will try to post pictures. The c.g. I am using is 72mm spot on on the great planes c.g. machine. The elevator has 8mm of movement both directions. The ailerons 10mm both directions. Max throw on the rudder. Believe me that is more than enough to control it. This provides very good roll rate and believe it or not tight loops if you want to.

Hi there guys well my bird did have the same ploblems with the nose gear, but for the CG it was 21 grams needed in the tail to have her CG,im flying with a ys fz63 super charged four stroke swinging a 11x8 prop and man is it fast !take offs are easy but landings are really fast and im on a asfault runway thats long.i`ve had mine for about a month so for and i love it im planing to replace the nose gear but unsure whats a good choice for this fast mover, please help P.S. here are some pics of her

Hi, I have the 360 mkII and need a better reference of the CG from leading edge- I saw someone had a measurement with the great planes cg machine but I am not familiar with that So if anybody can help me out with this I would be very greatful

My son (13) JUST CAME BACK FROM A FRIENDS HOUSE AND BROUGHT BACK ONE OF THESE. iT WAS SET UP FOR GAS BUT ALL WE FLY IS ELECTRIC. i WAS GOING TO GUT THE ELECTRISTAR TRAINER WHICH IS A 40 SIZE ELECTRIC WHICH SHOULD PULL 5-6 POUNDS WITH A 14.8 LIPO. hOPEFULLY IT WILL WORK BUT NOT SURE YET AS i JUST LOOKED AT THIS THING. kIND OF GOOFY LOOKING BUT HE IS EXCITED SO i WILL SEE WHAT I can do I just realized caps were on and I apologize I dont feel like re-typing. Like you, i think 4S lipo is the good way to powered this plane (power/weight).
I use 2 setup on the Lancair 360

First setup: battery Hextronik D9 HXT4100 (only 12C !) 14.8v , Turnigy motor 42-50 (700kv) 12x8 APC E (37.3A 535Watts 8845rpm 2156g pull and 86km/h). The lancair is 2636g weigt and fly 8 minutes.

Second setup with a better battery Zippy H 4000 mAh 14.8v and Turnigy C5045-890 (890kv) 12x6 APC E (54.9A 830Watts 10290Watts 2989g pull and 75km/h). 11x7 propeller for more speed.

I am putting in a 42mm outrunner out of a electristar that no-one seams to have specs on not even the manufacturer. I ordered a 14.8 4000mah but installed a set of 8.4 nimh (16.8v together) batteries and 45 amp dual lead esc and a receiver pack I had with the trainer. weighed in at 6.5 pounds 11x7 prop spinning 6100 rpms. not sure if its going to work but taxiing sunday with no aileron servos and about 1/2 throttle it lifted right off with no problems. I didnt think it would but landed ruff without and control of the ailerons my main reason was just to see if I could get up enough speed. The 14.8 weighs .4 ounces less than one of the batteries I am using now so my weight should be just less than 6 pounds. Hopefully it will work if not it will sit for awhile until the funds come in for a new motor and esc.

I JUST purchased one of these. Got the blue & white by accident because they shipped me the wrong scheme,.. but it's still nice. I've stripped my electronics and Evo .46 from my other plane,.. and was wondering if anyone knew of a better "step by step" assembly instructions for this plane? As this will be MY 1st real assembly...

Ok,.. I'm understanding the build better than I thought. I've gotten the motor installed properly, and cut out the cowling, I've also done the flaps' little hinges glued, the rear wings put on,and the wheels put together.

I have to wait for the main wings till a few servos come in on order. The Alpha 40 which I removed the engine and electronics only had 4 servos,.. and I need 5. And from what I see servo wire extenders.
I had to use other wheels I actually had spare. The wheels they sent with the plane were NOT correct. 2 might have worked, but the 3rd looked like a tail wheel... tiny. It makes me wonder if the right fuel tank is in the box, because it was in with the wheels package.

I also was glad I had a package of spare flap "hinges"... one wing flap was missing one hinge, and the tail center vertical flap was missing all 3.

Ok,... so here's my questions...
1st,.. what glue would you recommend for the motor throttle servo mount? I don't like cheap crappy epoxy. I like stuff I can trust 100% I'm actually thinking Gorilla Glue...lol
2nd,... The rear elevator options for the cable. "Can't adjust gearing" and "adjustable gearing" what's that mean?

I'd actually like to see more picture of peoples Lancairs done. I'm getting close to finishing myself. All I have left are rear control cables, wing flap settings, and a few minor details,.. oh and mounting the front wheel assembly.
