Default OS 160 factory settings

setup is as follows....os 160, perry pump...18x6w...jett turbo muffler......@ 2 tanks thru rebuilt engine(new piston and ring)...last week had it runnin fine, one flight smooth and painless good verticle, no leaning out on up line, flew about 1/4 tank no problem.....today started right up..only thing different is put cowl on...first flight...sounded alittle ruff in midrange still had good top end....landed fine...then started havin problems...on ground if you run it up to full throttle and cut back to idle its dies....wounderin if it was a ground issue....that would run ok in flight...but most of all was wondering what the factory needle settings where both high and low...also what an acceptable temp reading would be during or after flight....i did tac it but forgot to remember what it was..temp i have been getting athead is @ 165 degrees after running for a bit or flight maybe close to 180....wonder if its still breakin in and jus need to run some more fuel through it...or ????????????thanks

Running rough in midrange? Rich or lean? If it sounds like a knock it's lean and needs the low end richend.

To ball-park the idle mixture, close the throttle to idle. Now turn the idle mixture screw clockwise (gently!) until it stops. Now back it out 2-1/2 turns. This is a rough starting point.

Open the high-speed needle about 2-1/2 turns out from closed. This is very rich. Get the full-throttle setting found before you start to adjust the idle mixture.

It's not possible for us to give you an actual temperature or temperature range for your engine. The specific temperature is determined by too many factors. There is only one way to determine at what temperature your engine should be run. You have to run it first and then find out what temperature the engine reaches.

Make sure your engine is operating properly with the performance you expect. Use the exact setup every time...fuel, exhaust system, plug, measurement location, and so forth. If you change anything, the temperature will change. Once you have the engine running the way you want it. Take your measurement. This is your starting point. You will have to take measurements over time to find out how the weather affects it. As the air temperature and humidity change from day-to-day, the operating temperature will change. Eventually, you'll find a temperature range that you can work with.

Engine temperature is not an absolute number for setting your engine. It is only a guide, and can help alert you to potential problems. The only sure way to make sure your engine is running correctly is to see how it's running. An engine can be operating at "correct" temperatures, but not running well.

Finally, use any temperatures you read about, or people tell you, as rough information. The only useful numbers are the ones you actually measure when your engine is running correctly. If your engine is running correctly, then what you measure is correct, even if some else says it's too high or too low. Don't worry about the differences. Each engine is in a unique installation with a unique set of circumstances, so there can be wide variances in engine temperature.

thank you bill for your information...all sounds good, like im on the right track..gonaa find out today wheni go back out to the field...just wasnt sure about the idle setting and figured it would be good to start from factory, since it was a used engine and i have it set up different than first owner....as for temp...jus curious..but i see your point..my main concern was not wanting to overheat it..but i dont think i have to worry about that...seems to be doing fine and ussually stays with 15 degrees of its self..... no as for rpm range im hearing the 160 does well closer to 8000 tahn over 9000 ill have to tac it today and remeber what it was with an 18x6w.....i hear guys running 20's on this engine but i dont have that kind of room...or i would try it.... thanks agian....

As long as your engine's running rich of peak RPM, and has good airflow, temps will be fine.
