Default Macbook vs Dell 15z? Engineering student

Hey all. I am an engineering student at NJIT and i have some questions.. I have a really big 17.3in asus g74sx-bbk7 (best buy model) And i love it. BUT. I have issues with it to.

1. Its to big to carry around and to class
2. Battery life SUCKS
3. To heavy (9.4lbs!!)

So with that said. ive got a guy lined up to buy it for $800 tomorrow afternoon. Because i need/want something more portable. I was thinking the macbook pro 13in, or the dell 15z. I like both. But (from an engineering perspective) i like the macbook way more.

What would you guys recommend?

You are gona have to use Virtual Machine / Buy a copy of windows if you buy a Mac to run all the engineering software you'll be using.

I carry around my 15" Alienware. It weighs 10lbs but I deal with it. Battery life is also terrible so I bring the charger.

If you're going to use windows on it and not run any programs that are better on apple, you might as well just get the Dell.

If you do plan on using 3d graphics look for an amd a6 or a8 laptop. That is unless you are going to get dedicated graphics.
