Default Wing Jigs...

Wing jigs.

I see and read about these quite often, but have never had a need for one. Am thinking about one now, but which one?

Those I have seen are based upon magnets holding things in position, but mostly on wings with flat botton ribs. What I have coming up is a symetrical wing of large 15 inch chord and each wing panel about 40 inches long. I don't see those magnets holding alignment on such large items. The ribs already have holes in them for wire alignment over the plan, incorporating a bit of twist with each to provide exact washout angle when completed. Do any wing jigs have the feature and system for utilising these?

rcm/great planes used to have a wing jig that you could use for symetrical wing.it was a simple fixture that used two 1/4 music wire rods through the ribs[great planes kits already have the holes or they did at one time].then the rods just rested on suports of equal heights at both ends and had a block you placed in the middle for added suppoert there.the ajusto jig did the same thing but used 5/32 wire and provided a jig for drilling any wing rib for use on the jig,to bad they are out of production now,i have two that i use when building multiple models at the same time.never a warp.

You can find a fus jig and a wing jig on the RCMplans.com site just go to requested articles, then features, then scroll down amongst the dozens of useful article reprints until you find the jigs.
http://www.rcmplans.com/issues/reque...-081967-1.html is the wing jig I built. A few photos of my own jig are on this site http://www.modelflying.co.uk/forums/...s.asp?th=29060

I have a magnetic and old commercial one and do use it on occassion most notably when I want to do a number of items at a time and have done up to six engine nacelles easily.

Here is also a simple fuselage jig I used when I was making runs of Q-500 airframes up to about five at a time.

The Great Plans rod type wing jig is still sold at Tower and not to expensive I just acquired one for an occassional appropriate wing. One interesting fact about this one is that most of the appropriate sized Great Planes Kits come with allignment holes for this jig already cut in the ribs.
