I am about to cover a plane and was wondering what the majority has to say about these two products. I am going to cover the plane with the product that comes out on top. Please add your comments!!!

I've used both successfully. I have to say that I prefer Ultracoat though. There are a few resons for this:

- The backing comes off much easier
- It is much better around curves
- It is more consistent between colors (some colors of Monokote are easier to work with than others)
- It wrinkles less and stays tight longer in my experience
- It doesn't seem to bubble much when applying over sheeting or over itself
- It is just plain easier to work with

Monokote does have some advantages though:

- Monokote is more glossy
- Monokote comes in more colors
- There is a little more Monokote on a roll
- The seams are less visible with Monokote and stay stuck better

I've also noticed that Ultrcoat paint seems to be a lot better than Top-Flite Lusterkote.

These are just my opinions of course based on my limited experiences.

Make it a two color plane and use one roll of each, then you decide which one you like. (Just use the Monokote first as it requires more heat).

I use both. In fact I just covered a plane in Ultracote/Monokote mix.

Ultracote is far easier to work with. I love the paper backing. I like that it doesn't stick to itself like plastic wrap.
Layering requires poking holes in the bottom layer or bubbles will be everywhere. The adhesive is kind of weak.

Monokote is cheaper. You get more on a roll. It's more glossy. You can use the windex method for layering flexibility. Seams can be melted down. Once Monokote is down, it's down. The adhesive is very strong. Requires Zen like patience to work with.

The Easy Sport is covered in Monokote using the Windex method to layer the colors on the wing. The Starduster is a mix of Monokote Red, White and Trasparent Blue on the Bottom with Ultracote Red/Yellow Checkers and Pearl Blue pin stripe.

Nice, those orange and red checkers look great. Everything said about the two products sounds right on to me from my experience with them. I like using them both as well. I tend to use Ultracote for my more utilitarian covering jobs and Monokote for my more aesthetic covering jobs.

I prefer Ultracote (Oracover here in Europe) over Monocote, it's easier to work with.
For my next build I have bought Solartex though, this will be fun to try out.

I think it should be mandatory to have a look at Minnflyers covering videos, these are great and taught me the basics of covering! [sm=drowning.gif]

I've read about covering over and over but for some reason, seeing it done helps out a lot more, The videos are great.

I prefer MonoKote, for me it just works better.
I like the way it sticks and I also like the way it shrinks.
The suggestion to use both seems like a good one to me, some people like both products, but most people seem to greatly prefer one product over the other.
