Need a New Starter…Which One?
I’ve had it with my Hobbico starter which has to be tethered to my power panel and I’m looking to step up to a starter that comes complete with a battery attached. However, the number of products out there is a bit confusing, and I was wondering if anybody here had a recommendation.
I fly .25 2C to 1.20 4C.
Thanks.

Why don't you just get the Hobbico Power Core Starter Pack MKII from one of the online sites. At Tower it's only 28 bucks, that way you don't have to get a new starter, just the battery pack.

Sullivan
Check out the Sullivan power pack. You put your own C size Ni-cads in it and it will work with any starter. I put 3000 ma cells in mine and a charge will last almost a month of flying. I'm starting .80-1.50 4-strokes with it. We also use it for our flight training program so it usually does 15-20 starts a day on weekends.

KSJ part # 454. $12 bucks + you'll need to add a pair of 6-cell (car) battery packs.

No, it isn't much to look at.
I have this setup. Because I fly electric planes I had a bunch of 1400 mAh sub-C cells on hand, so I used these for the starter's power packs. I charge them every two weekends.
Note - the two 6-cell packs are good for nearly 17V when fully charged. Very powerful!

If you want a once in a life time starter get any one of the Sullivan`s! I have a Deluxe on their power pack & is the best & safest I have found in 45 years of starter use! Like the old Packard Auto adds used to say "Ask the man that owns one">>>>>>>>>big max 1935

Try out the Kavan, in my opion, the best available for anything from the biggest 4 strokes down to 1/2 A. Small, powerfull and exceedingly smooth.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned it, but if you have a good 12 volt cordless drill, you can chuck your starter shaft and cone in it. I have a 12 volt dewalt that I used on my heli mainly (starter shaft only). Then when my hobbico starter died, I cannabalized it and chucked it into the drill.

I have the Mmagnum geared starter (looks like a Kavan except the Magnum is blue). I power it with two 7.2v 2400mah car packs connected with a KSJ holder.
It spins my Saito R325 Radial with ease.
Best combo I ever used. Light, powerful and portable.

Thats the little feller that gave me a fit years ago! If you look at the bottom of the accessories & parts list ,you will see replacement brushes#HLFK1/08, out of stock$9.80. One of the brushes is the switch! I have yet to see new brushes for a Sullivan starter. Buy once & forget it! MAX H
