wing span or wing area
I cant seem to understand if the fuselage is counted as a lifting surface when calculating wing loading on wing ?Are the manufactures counting this as a lifting area? What is the proper way ,say mid wing design plane two wing panels 40" long by 14" chord with a 7"wide fuselage this can effect numbers in a big way .What do you guys think? :

The only way that I can see it adding the same amount of lift is if it is a delta wing type plane .To me the fuselage in a standard type plane is only lifting at the tail area the rest is drag .Maybe the manufacturers list the total wing span to include fuselage to make it more of marketable .

Yes, that area of the wing projected thru the fuse should be considered as part of the lifting area. And, Marc, the tail does lift on most standard planes but: it lift DOWN. For stability, the stab area has a downward force in normal flight.

Thanks for the info rodney never considered the tail acting in opposite force to the wing .Strange then that the fuselage should be considered a lifting airfoil unless your doing knife edge flying .This aerodynamics stuff is getting very informative .

Whether or not the fuselage helps with the lift, the wing area does count the area that passes across the fuselage. That's just how it's done. Basically we learn what a wing-loading means relative to another wing loading. So if you didn't count that area, then you would not count the area on any aircraft and the relationship would stay the same more or less.
