I need to paint 3 boats and want to do a good job. I need to get these 3 done but I guess im to scared of not doing it right. Im lost at the hole thing (colors,themes,paints,price,ect.) Please HELP

Woah! Sounds like you have a lot to learn. For starters before we all add our 2 cents worth, what is your experience like, and what type of spray equipment do you have?

Hate to say it, but have you taken the time to research anything? There are SEVERAL lengthy threads on how to's on painting. From brush, to rattle can, to jobs completed with spray equipment. Have you seen these? They WILL answer many questions you will have. However we are here to assist.

hemi, they may be buried so far down, stuff like that could be best made a sticky, any chance of this, please?

Yes I do. My painting experience is not much I did paint two boats with spray cans still not sure if I like them lol. I think the finish is OK but the theme sucks. As far as the equipment I do have an air compressor but dont have a gun (not sure what one to buy, dont want to pay to much if not needed)

Here you go buddy. Heres a spray detail gun that I use for everything from gelcoat to clearcoat and everything in between. Think I paid only $30 at Home Depot. Don't need expensive equipment to do a really nice job on your boats.

I'll search around a little myself and see what I can find. If theres anything good, I see what I can do about making it a sticky. You guys find anything I'll take a look at it myself for sticky appeal ;)

what kind of ships are they?

my themes are simple, for cargo ships, they run in "South Sands Nuclear" livery, with port of registry being "Heysham" or "westport" in the case of Gemini...

Dreamin Hemi so a $30 gun will work fine (my brother tells me the same). Now as far as paint where do you get it from. And also I have heared the word gelcoat alot but to be honest not sure where to get it and what it is?

For finishing paint, I always use House of Kolor brand. I clearcoat that paint with a cheaper brand sold by NAPA.

Gelcoat is what is applied directly to the inside of a boat mold, that ends up being the outer layer of a hull once the glasswork is complete and removed from the mold. To learn more about gelcoat, and molds, even the paints you are asking about, I have a build thread currently going that demonstrates exactly how this process is done.

Your cargo ship is awesome, great job. I've just finsihed repairing/overhauling my dads Liberte fire ship. First big ship for me with bow thruster, very excited.

Thank you for the threads that you gave me it might take me a while to read all of them but I know this is what I need. I know this will help. Hopefully I can ask you about ?'s i might have during the time that I read these. Anyways thanks again.

get a gravity feed HVLP spray gun. There better then the siphen feed guns and save you on paint and less overspray=more paint on your boat.You can find the smalls ones cheap,even the big ones you can find them at 40.00 or less. I've got 4 gravity HVLP spray guns. The Clear that dreaminghemi is talking about is CROSSFIRE clear #15410 actavator #15411. The clear is 18.00 aquart and 1/2 pint of actavator is 8.00. I've been using this for along time. on those paint threads you'll see me on most of them give out advices. I do autobody&paint for alive for along time.;) I've been asked alot of questions on painting and answer alot of questions too.;) I love to help anyone out.;)

I'm using a 1.3 or 1.2 tip on my guns. most guys use a 1.4. Mine lays the paint out like glass.;) I got 4 guns.three are from TSC=tough s**t charlie.=tractor sale company. We call that place that name. But got the guns for 75.00 there close to christmass time.Its was a three pack,one small touch up gun and two full size guns,one has a 1.7 tip the other has a 1.4 tip.All three of them are gravity feed guns. My favert gun in my is my Accuspray Isaac Newton gravity feed HVLP gun. Payed 325 in 2000. Never has a proublem with it,the best spray gun that I'd ever used. Use devilbiss,Sharpe, Binks,SATA Jet.It beats them all in my book.Had an old boss who'd had a SATA JET.used my gun and he loved it.Likes how it lays the paint like glass. I havent rebuilt it yet. But will this year some time.HVLP Gravity feed guns are easy to take apart and clean.They use low presure=less paint over spray in the air=more paint spray on your car ,truck and so on.They use less paint to spray=saving you money!!!;) I will never ever use a pot feed gun ever again!!!![:'(] Been using gravity feed gun since 91 and never looked back.;) Here the pic of that gun,but mine is black.

anything bigger then a 1.4 tip is concitederd as a primer tip. I use a 1.4 tip for priming to lay it out smoother. Just found out accuspray makes a tip down to .7 for my gun,I'm going to order the 1.1 for my gun but will check into the other tips too.Plus want to buy the newer twist off lid gun cup.:D Also just found they was bought out by 3M! heres what my gun that I use looks like also here my TSC touchup gun too,works great too!!.;) just found my pic of my spray gun that have.;)

Misshydro I looked up that Accuspray and TSC spray guns. The Accuspray guns seem to be pretty nice but wow not the prices dont really think myself personally would get enough use out of it for the price. The TSC page couldnt really find to much on theres. About a year I was planning on going with one of the packages (couldn't figure out which one to choose at the time) on this website: http://www.tcpglobal.com/spraygundepot/finishstart.aspx
I am wondering if anyone could tell me if these would be worth it or not and/or what package would be the best. Im not saying I would buy it from there website but using the website as a reference.

Those guys are too costly.. found one place that has my gun but 07 version for 330.00 that 100.00 less then those bone heads!!! You can also checkout harborfreight co. I'm going to put in a couple links to hobby paint systems for Nitro boats. These are harder to choose the proper paints for, and the brands/types available are very limited. Nelson, Klass Kote, and Automotive.

get ready to pay higer prices for those paints!! plus you have to pay for shipping.Automotive paint are better plus you have better color choices and cooler cooler colors to choces from like metalic to pearls to candy colors too.;)

what I painted Nord Icelandia and the other boats in was Plasticote brand spray-enamel that comes in 500ml rattle cans.

first to go down was 3 coats of red-oxide colored primer, followed by 3 coats of gloss red, followed by 3 coats of clear acrylic of the same brand, this lasted well until Nord Icelandia developed a leak, so the affected area had to be sanded to the fibreglass base below the timber. this was then re-done with grey primer over the lower section, again 3 coats, and once the black trim line was put on, (using 10mm vinyl tape), the hull was again sprayed with clear acrylic.

her superstructure is hand painted..

as long that its not gas or nitro,rattle cans are good but not for gas or nitro or it will lift ASAP!! On my Oberto CMB.21Rs Redhead I'd used Dupi-colors spray paints for the colors and use automotive Crossfire clear as my top coat.
