OFNA is a good choice and so is HPI, something like a nitro Firestorm. I normally run 20% nitro in most of my engines, I like O'Donnell fuel myself but others are good too.

As far as starting goes, most engines use a pullstart though I personally like rotostarts. Rotostart systems replace the pullstart with a backplate that has a port for the rotostart wand, which is basically a geared electric motor/battery combination that turns the engine over. It's a lot easier to start that way than with a pullstart. Some cars even have built in starter motors that either use the RX battery or an external one.

You need a glow plug ignitor to start it, other than the pullstart and fuel. Watch this for break-in; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RXoqDGcp6as

That's the high speed and the low speed needle, there is sometimes a mid speed but not very often. Ofna is good choice and the hyper 7 would be good too http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXCWHA&P=M HPI gas been of its game lately, the firestorm is a decent truck but I would choose the ofna or hyper over it anyday.

http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXBCVP&P=ML good beginner engine in this one, it comes with everything (except fuel) needed to start it, and unlike the hyper 7 its in stock

Ok, i'm going to explain it. This should tell you how to tune;http://www.xenonproject.com/tuning-y...gine-a-10.html
BREAK-IN. STAGE 1.
1. Put a full tank of gas in the rc car. Let it start and idle while you tune the rc car. When you are done tuning, let it idle until it runs out of fuel.
STAGE 2.
2. Put a full tank of gas in the rc car. Let it start, and pick up the back end. Do short inclement bursts of about 1/4th throttle until it runs dry.
STAGE 3.
3. Time for some fun. Put a full tank of gas in the RC car. Let it start, and start doing a figure 8 on your driveway or where you are breaking the rc car in. Do 1/4 throttle while doing the figure 8s. Repeat this step for stage four, and your engine will be broken in.

actually your breakin steps are a little off from what I remember(its been awhile since I broke a nitro in though)
every engine (outside the K4.6) I've broke in you basically put the RC on a box for steps 1, and 2 and let a full tank just run out
steps 3, and 4 you do 25% throttle while driving in circles on paved ground
5, and 6 is half throttle to 3/4th while doing circles on paved ground with occasional blipping to full
and not to touch the needles till after done with step 6 as the default settings are meant for breakin
also between steps let the engine cool to ambient temperature with the piston stored at BDC(Bottom Dead Center) which is where the piston is at its lowest point in the sleeve

To find BDC before you run the RC take the glow plug out and look down the hole and rotate the flywheel till the piston is at the very bottom, and put a mark on the flywheel wither on the bottom or top(whichever you prefer) so you remember where the bottom is, and rotate the flywheel to that point when done running.

Don't let it idle in one spot for a long period of time, it could over heat...

The instructions that came with my truck was to use a 1/4 throttle on the first tank, in short steady accelerations then braking.

Heres what I went by.

fuel depends on what you can get for your LHS as shipping fuel is insanely expensive.
anything but traxxas top fuel is good
Seriously though that stuff is terrible as it has WAY too much oil in it. When I used that junk after a run I would have to take my pipe off and drain it cause all the excess oil would get into the pipe and clog it up, and drip all over everything, and the engines occasionally would die out.
Last bottle of fuel I bought was O'Donnel and I liked it as I didn't have to clean out the pipe after every use, and the RC's ran consistently.

as for how high of grass I'd estimate 1-2 inches (max) anything past that is not recommended for any RC

Better get some fresh fuel to break it in. You will be dealing with the settings for a while, old fuel can be a problem. I'd try it once you broke it in, see how it performs. It may or may not be ok, depends on how it was stored.

Buy some Losi Nitrotane 20% or 15%. It seems to be a really good mixture.

We use Losi Nitrotane (20 an 30) and have had zero problems. In fact, the only knock I've ever heard anyone say about it is it's clear. I feel priming should be felt and not seen anyway. ;-)
