I've read a few posts(this and other forums) stating the Frog is not that durable.

Mainly the frame, and gearbox (sides bulging, weak gears etc).

Is the front suspension very sloppy, and can it be tightened up with shims?

I want to run a sport tuned motor or similar, only small jumps (2 feet high or less).

It should hold up to that shouldn't it?

It is a classic for sure!!

The good thing is that w/ it being re-released, if you ever break something, you can get the parts easily!!

I have had an old Monster Beetle that has been frogized at one point in its life sitting here. It came with the Frog wheels and tires on on it but not much else. Basically just a rolling chassis. Now i have been considering the idea of rebuilding it using one of the frog re re kits. Good or bad idea? Secondly..What body did they use on the MB the same as the sand scorcher or Blitzer beetle?

Wow. Found this thread while Googling, and it has totally brought me back to 1984 big time. Was cleaning out my basement last weekend and came across my 26 year old Tamiya Frog, still sitting there in a box, with radio, batteries, spare parts, etc. My 7 yr old daughter asked if it still worked, and lo and behold it does! Over the last few days I have begun to tinker with it and have started to track down parts all over eBay and elsewhere online to restore it. I can still remember when, as a 13 yr old boy in 1984, flush with a little cash from my Bar Mitzvah, I proceeded to my neighborhood hobby shop and plunked down a few hundred for my Frog kit plus radio. I was so excited that I spent the next 2 days and nights in the basement completing the kit. It brought me a lot of joy back then, and reading this thread reminded me of all the fun and challenges I had with the car (excessive play in the rear trailing arms, stripped outdrives, replacing the gears, etc. etc.) and how I should share the fun with my kids now.

I actually got the thing running last night, and with minimal effort so far. I cleaned the receiver, the servos, the MSC, opened up the gearbox and greased the gears, bought a new 7.2V NiMh battery (though my 7 cell hump pack from the late 80's still took a decent charge) and charger, and replaced the receiver battery holder with a new one (due to corrosion), and it worked! The rear suspension still has way too much slop, leading to some grinding on spinouts, and I can see I'm going to need to replace those rear arms and driveline, as well as track down some different suspension supports, but I can't wait to get it fully restored and operational again and relive my early teen years with RC!

Thanks. Yes, getting a new kit is very tempting, and I'm thinking about doing just that. Have always coveted something with 4WD, and I do love Tamiya...any recommendations?

Hmmm...interesting. I always liked the Hot Shot. What about the Boomerang? Was that any good? Never got to see one of those up close.

It worked for me..

I couldn't afford all these RCs when I was little (I had a Hornet and a Wild Willy) so it is cool to be able to build those classics now... without spending a fortune buying some 20+ yrs old NIBs at crazy prices..
