Default My new project car - TA05v.2 R chassis kit (Tamiya #84159)

I've been a great fan of the Tamiya scene since I was 14 years old. I got into 4WD now, and never looked back. With the current lipo battery technology, mixed with high cooled brushless ESC and motor combos, with the right gearing and tuning, are complete artwork on wheels rolling between 25mph to 80.33mph. My 1st TA05-R did both, although I did spend way too much on that car because "it earned resurrection" in my book. I had a 1984 Frog for my 1st car, so the TA05 series is a joy to work on, although it's an on-road car.

I also noticed that my older car has the same final drive ratio as my fisrt cow hide AERC10T with the skinny front tires and cow hide paint job. 2.25:1. Neato yay!

I pretty much maxxed out the older Tamiya and want to work on the v.2 R, and already have a bunch of blue bling aluminum, blue titanium, kit titanium upgrade screws, all carbon reinf parts, option stabilzer bars, racing steering set, and blue aluminum rockers full on w/ the 1mm down type TRF damper spring retainers.

The pics I posted are the mock-up, so no suspension tuning has been done yet. Nice build, although the bag ID vs the instructions was pretty frustrating. I ended opening all metal parts bags by page 5. Other than that, flawless

I'm tempted to simply bone-out my old TA05-R and use any and every possible cool part from one TA05 to the other. Tempting . . . . . . . .

Please stay tuned. I will stop subscribing to this post after I upgrade/mod this project until I can't do it any more.

I use the X-Pattern belted pro compound radials on my AETC5FT and TA05-R. I made my own personal speed run records with those tires and got to speeds of almost 83mph with the Tamiya car.

I'm opting for 24mm Jaco blue dot pre-mounted tires for the V2 R. I also threw the #53990 TA05 Aluminum Bulkhead on the rear of the car. After I install the front Aluminum IFSbulkhead I'll post some updated photos, w/ and without the body.

Default RE: My new project car - TA05v.2 R chassis kit (Tamiya #84159)

Thanks for the input guys!

Ideal parts to replace for this kit:

1. steering post bearings (950 size) series bearings X8, for IFS front end and dual bellcrank steering
2. Carbon Reif. lower deck
3. Carbon Reinf. Rear Damper Stay
4. Alumninum Bulkheads front and rear.
5. A full tuned stabilizer bar set
6. 0.1mm, 0.2mm, and 0.3mm shim sets

Use the shim sets to take out the excessive play out of center diff pulleys, etc. They sell 5mm and 3mm sets. a good tune up investment if you ride pro.
Run a wide array of stabilizer bars according to your track conditions
Titanium, Aluminum, and Carbon Fiber.
Dial up that front end stiff yet responsive

what did you do to the diffs to make them handle 83mph? My Tb03 diffs are not as smooth as they used to be after 1 month of 60mph bashing, should i change the diff balls? Are ceramic balls better and what fluid is good for diff life?
Thank you, your help is greatly appreciated.

Default RE: My new project car - TA05v.2 R chassis kit (Tamiya #84159)

I beefed up both pulleys with black aluminum outdrives and use a regular TA05 pulley and ceramic balls in the rear. I melted the kit's rear pulley and broke off one side of the outdrives twice before I beefed it all up. I also replaced the rear blue aluminum swing shafts with the 48mm black steel ones. I always check my diffs out after 6-8 runs now. I also keep a bunch of diff plates and swing shaft protectors as spares.

Driving with that drag motor was just trashing the car after a while, and it got to the point where there's no such thing as a crash that wouldn't break anything I just recently took the drag motor out and replaced it with a pro stock BL motor instead.

As far as diff fluid, I bought a giant tube of the Tamiya diff lube and it it's great. There's some TA05 diff seals out there on the market if you run in gritty conditions.

cool i am looking forward to that video

i am using an ezrun 8.5t with 3s which gives out about 50,000rpm which is 15,000rpm less than your system so hopefully when i get my x patterns they won't melt like that.

For the Pros on draggin with BL motors:

1. Pay attention to your ESC settings, esp if they're controlled by digital software (Iphone, PC software).

2. PRACTICE WITH A SUB-MODEL. Practice with a sub-kit, unless your are uber rich. DONOTATTEMPTwith a full end kit unless you kwow what you're doing!!!

3. Groom your straight - NOONEELSEWILL. Make sure youre holeshot/ track is clean and dry. No one else is gonna clean it up for you; even if they do, dbl check it.

4. EASE the throttle - no need to trash your drivetrain for a stupid youtube video!!!!!! (I.E., burning out ball diifs by holding one tire or the other then pulling full throttle and posting it on youtube!!!!! Trash your drivetrain on another thread!!!!) No need for that CRAP!!!! It is crap!!!!!!

I am trying to use the same hardware that Tamiya provided, yet the front end setup on this IFS config is, well, different. It seems much stiffer, and even though I know to add spacers and all, it just doesn't make any sense to me. Any IFS setups and tune-ups other from Tamiya USA would be quite graciously helpful i want it like my TA05-R without adding TA05 series front end parts . . . .

I want that TA-05R Chassis kit, you know the one with all the TRF Hopups. Still it's cheaper than a 416X,
but more expensive than an associated TC6.

Maybe a couple of pennies cheaper than a TRF416X, or even a TRF417 for that matter - here's what I put into it:

If I ever want to part with it, I will drop you a line. Unfortunately, I am very fond of that car, especially because it's got the same FDR as the old RC10T I had (2.25:1).

I'm planning on modding out my ver.2 R with all the same parts I now have on my R, and and want to get the front carbon bumper mounts for both (both are different parts.)

53780 x 2 - 49.7mm Titanium Coated Suspension Shaft (53851 x 2 for the ver.2 R)
53884 - TA05 Carbon Battery Plate Set
53876 - Aluminum Damper Retainer (1mm Down Type)
53905 - TA05 Aluminum Side Brace
53893 - TA05 Lightweight Carbon Lower Deck (54231 for the ver. 2 R)
84006 x 2 - TA05 Aluminum Differential Joint (Black) Limited Edition Items
49462 - TA05 Urethane Bumper (Black) Limited Edition Items (not needed for the ver. 2 R)
53844 - TA05 Aluminum Transponder Stay
53845 - TA05 Carbon Damper Stay (Front)*
53882 - TA05 Carbon Mount Spacer For Damper Stay (1 req. for the front carbon damper stay)*
53846 - TA05 Carbon Damper Stay (Rear)
53837 - TA05 Aluminum Motor Heat Sink
53920 - TA05 Aluminum Motor Mount (54197 for ver. 2 R)
53848 - TA05 Aluminum Racing Steering Set
49360 - TA05 Titanium Screw Set (84101 for ver. 2 R)
53588 - 10mm Shim Set (3 Types / 10 pcs. each) for shimming out the diff pulleys - done on both cars
50882 - TA04 King Pin Set (Stronger and more durable, can't be used on EVOV/ ver.2 R
42118 - TRF 3x32mm Blue Titanium Turnbuckle Shaft (2PCS.) EXPENSIVEPARTALERT
42120 x 3 - TRF 3x42mm Blue Titanium Turnbuckle Shaft (2PCS.) EXPENSIVEPARTALERT
53990 x 2 - TA05 Aluminum Bulkhead

Acer Racing Ceramic Nitride 3mm Diff Balls (part number?) for rear diff pulley
Regular TA05 Diff pulley for rear (not the alternated diff pulley, still got that one in the front)

Also I have the Tamiya Touring Car Soft Set Damper Oil (Part number?) Comes in #200, 300, and 400. I understand it's a discontinued item, so I may use AE silicone shock oil as a replacement in the future.

Robinson Racing 64P 100T spur (Installed on the ver. 2 R)
Robinson Racing 30-40T pinions (Minimum of 35T b/c of the motor mount on the ver.2 R)
Castle Creations Mamba Max Pro ESC
Futaba S3305 High Torque Metal Gear 3 Pole Steering Servo
LRP 17.5 Vector X12 Pro Stock BL motor
AE XP3D 3 channel digital 27mHz FM radio Transmitter and Receiver

HPI 190mm RX-73DS body painted with Spazstix red/gold/green/purple spray
HPI 26mm X-Pattern Belted Pro Compound radials mounted on kit wheels

I lent my camera to my brother for a while, and I want to take a pic of the ver.2 R manual, in case any of you guys out there want specific parts. I will have to do my best with my Droid2's smartphone camera for now, and will post it later on. If anyone has any trouble reading it, please let me know and I can get you the part number or numbers you're looking for

P.S. - I have an AE TC5FT roller plus extras that I would gladly donate to a track as a winning prize at a race . . .

I am thinking of taking out the IFS front end, which can be easily be swapped out with less than a handful of parts:

A TA05 series bulkhead
The front Damper Stay and a spacer of course
the Front Chassis Stiffener from a TA05-R, the holes all line up but I think I might need spacers in the middle but we will see . . . .

Don't get me wrong, I like the IFS setup. Unique, sure. Works fantasic. Limited settings make me wanna go back, and I'm sure I'm not the only one that feels that way ;(

Well I'm racing a Yokomo YR4MII PRO car I have tommorow. It's the only saddle pack car ever made to my knowledge.
If I need pulleys or belts I may have to part the car out to something else because I dont think
I'll be able to find yokomo parts here in the UNITED STATES. But I heard TA05 parts fit my car without issue.
The pulleys are the same size as the TA05, just the diff balls are smaller like associated size.
Now belts are gonna be impossible for me to get. So I hope they last a season or so. I pray and hope for the best!
I plan on getting a Tamiya TRF touring car anyhow, just gonna see how long the local track will run touring cars.

Thant's cool that you can use TA05 parts for it. I like the tub chassis too, and I have seen thousands of TA05s across the nation. The common TRF/ EVOIV series parts that are shown in the catalog, will you will find a very big list of interchangeable parts between shaft-drive and belt-drive 4WD Tamiya TCs. The genuine Tamiya Hop-Up or Ltd ed items combinations are up there. I guess I like my newer car more with EVOVparts

hey see on the ta05, anyone had good luck building the stock diffs because i found the tb03's diff a PITA, first those stupid balls, then the plastic diff halves snap when tightening and then the stupid cap screw head strips. I purchased the aluminium diff halves, and getting some ceramic balls, diff rings and spare cap screw from rcmart. Does the ta05 have this problem and does it come with the useless plastic diff halves?
