Jetset, I've only been doing this since this past Friday, so I'm sure there a lot more I don't know about, but I found this tutorial to be very good for using Metasequoia (freeware) and FMS:

See my thread in this forum for what I've been able to do over the last several evenings. The fundamental method is to break the elements of the plane down into the most basic geometric shapes like cylinders, spheres, cones and cubes; modify those shapes and assemble them into a modular structure. Don't try to manipulate one object/shape too much; for example, it's easier to make a fuselage with a turtledeck out of two cylinders stacked together than to try and squeeze both forms out of one.
