THE FIRST POST in this thread was a summary of previous projects, some completed and some not completed.
Hint - read the text between the pictures and you'll see that there's a timeline thing going on.
Kinda.
Then in THE SECOND POST (still in the same thread, stay with me here) is where the build log for my CURRENT PROJECT starts.
A large, some may even say BIG (hint - the thread title) RC car powered by a pocketbike motor, as featured in the first picture in the second post in this thread.
I believe it even says "Pocketbike motor" in the vicinity of the above mentioned picture, in the second post, still in this very thread, aptly (some may say) named the BIG one.
Hope this helps.
If not, I have nothing more to offer, part from lots of future pictures of homebuilt RC cars, which you may or may not get enjoyment from looking at.

I hope you know I was being sarcastic Dirty....all you guys really do some impressive stuff. You always seem to find a way to make scrap work, points for that! Makes me sad, if I can just get some funds together I can get back on my "forever" project. Either that or I need to be a lot less of a perfectionist about it.
Side note: I really like the large rear swing arm, simple yet very effective.

All looking good DVP... But I must say... I can't wait to see you get that lathe mastered and start making highly precise parts... Perhaps a mill one day as well!!

I was gonna take a stab at you and ask how your project is going...... so.... how is it going?
QSPSB - Long time no see.
Those adapters are pretty darn precise, I just didn't "clean" them properly.
As you probably know this little lathe isn't exactly designed to make your own crankshafts on, but it's good enough for what I need it for at the moment.
A mill would be nice but my next priority is saving up for a decent MIG welder and start rebuilding my aluminium chassie car.
There will be lots of lathe work for that one too.
But for now I'll work on this one.

Hows mine going? Well, no where. It kinda fell to the side for now. Been really busy with some product development for 10th scale. Just to get the funds together to buy the a few parts I'm not willing to make. I'll probably pick back up on it this spring. Been working on some new tools, (rubber/plastic molds, vacuum former), hopefully that will allow me to make a few other parts I would have normally bought.

Actually if you upgrade to the all steel gears and run a 4 jaw chuck the mini lathe can be quite concentric... I've seen cranks turned on them too..
Ahh welding aluminum ehh.. Millermatic 140/180 Auto-Set is a good choice... I repaired some old aluminum Holley valve covers the other day using our 212 and it was a blast.. Haven't welded aluminum in ages..

if you need to get a cleaner finish try a small radius at the end of the cutting tool and a slower feed and very small cut...you can rough out then just change bit and clean up at the end

Yeah for clean finish it's best to go fast, small cut, auto feed and lots of cutting oil.
These wheel adapters don't need to be all shiny and smooth so I just made them with manual feed and probably taking slightly deeper cuts than I should.
As for size, I'm aiming for about 1000mm wheelbase and 650-700mm track width.

Nice work as always DV. Your welds are looking A grade these days [8D]. I like the way you made those wheel adapters.

Hey Sam.
I'm thinking of making something like Rydh did in his 1/2 scale Beach Buggy.
Add a little gear reduction to the end of a 1/4 scale servo.
Seems a lot easier.

Well, after way too long and toooooo many other distractions and projects I've FINALLY put this build back on the bench today... 
I spent a lot of time mostly drinking beer and looking at it, deciding what stays and what goes, and I think it will need to be slightly longer and a bit wider.
Then I started thinking about how to set the front end up.
A-arms and stuff like that.
Threw a few ideas around, along the lines of c-hubs, how to make them etc, but decided to keep it simple and with as few moveable parts as possible.
No pics as yet as I still haven't quite decided what and how to do it, but I promise there will be progress made here very soon.
Just wanna make sure I'm on to something that looks like it's gonna work before I get too excited....

After more beer I started making some mock-up bits for the front end.
Alternative to tube bender.
Cut grooves, bend, weld, grind.
Will get rod ends/rose joints/whatever they're called for the ends instead of these ball joints.
Drilled the hole at 7.5mm and turned the end of the 8mm shaft down to get a tight fit.
Will probably make up a little lug to sit on the inside to stabilise it a bit more and then weld it all on.
Well, time to go shopping for some rod ends.

Ok I think I've worked out how to do the arms.
Made a little jig.
Note the hole which will
A) stop the ply from burning
and
B) enable me to weld all around the join.
I cut the tubing at 22.5 degrees to get a 45 degree bend.
Now I've only got another 7 to do

Cheers Ken, yeah it takes a bit of time to set it all up but once it's done it's worth it to try and keep all the bits identical.
Still have no idea how long to make the arms but I'll get one assembled and take it from there.
