Default Bug Splat Stories

Had an interesting thing happen today. I was hovering my littel Rappy39, and huge black Carpenter Bee tried to fly over my chopper. Bad choice. It bounced up off the top of the blades a few times then finally shot thru to the ground. Strange thing to see, but even stanger was it was still in one piece and alive!

What weird things have you guys seen?

Not Helli related but a bug splat all th same.

I was running my motor cycle at 100 to 150 mph when I took a large bumblebee in the arm, it almost took me off the bike and it hurt like he@@.

not a bug but similar, a friend of mine was filming a RC biplane with his RC helicopter.
The camera was mounted to look sideways so the two pilots were simply flying in formation side by side.
Anyway, in order to produce the best quality film, they pushed the limits of formation flying getting closer and closer until the inevitable happened.
Apparently, a gust of wind, loss of control, loss of orientation, dumb thumbs or whatever happened, and the heli and biplane collided midair, side by side.

Heres the crazy part, the top biplane wing got caught inbetween the helicopter skid and mainframe, and was ripped off by the sudden breakaway from the formation.

The biplane landed intact using the lower wing on one side and both wings on the other.
The Heli landed intact still with the biplane wing stuck inbetween the skid and mainframe.

In the interests of the forum, I will try and post a picture from this event, next time i see my freind.

Vortex,

Wow! gotta see that pic!

Diverig,

OUCH! I'll stick with cars, fewer bug splats, more room for heli's too.

I have had a butterfly beeing sucked down through the rotorblades ones. It was during hover practise. The butterfly survived!

Yours is also 10 times larger. Anyway i've been hovering a few times and there would be butterflys or other bugs flying near the blades. I would always hope it would get sucked in. And another time when I was flying my dad said a barn swallow almost flew into the heli.

Well Spaceman, you took care of the speed problem.

but I am still happy to have the second fastest Raptor just not such a big fuel bill at the end of the flight.lol

Well, I'm sure I've killed my fair share of bugs with my propeller (sorry, gotta interject a plane story in here) but nothing that is story worthy. I have, however, had a very up close and personal encounter with a large black bird with my trainer. The picture below shows the results. You can visit here for the whole story.

Wow! thats one nasty bird attack!

We've got a few black birds at our feild. One of them made like he was going to attack my plane once, so i turned around and buzzed him a couple times and he went away, seemed like the right thing to do at the time. i was flying an Aresti with a saito 91 on the front. pretty sure the bird couln't keep up. Proabaly the only thing that saved my plane, now that i think about it.

Yeah, I didn't even get a chance to see the bird (well, except for it floating in the pond at the end of our runway). It took me out right after takeoff. Really sucked. But, it made for a good story at least.

Diverig,

Yup that fuel is expensive!

The heli goes thru almost a gallon a day. Would be cheaper to be addicted to crack! (but not as much fun of course)

My mom really liked humming birds and had atleast 3 feeders around the driveway. I practiced hovering in the driveway and the inevitable happened. The little guy that got too close to the "black hole" had enough mass to throw my Nexus into a recoverable spin. There was just a little blood on one rotor blade and a small mass of bloody feathers to tell the tale.

BeardKing, I read the whole story but have one question...Did: the bird "attack" the plane, or the plane "attack" the bird, or they simply ended up trying to use the same airspace, at the same time? That would be some GREAT video! Sorry you lost your plane, and that the bird learned a lesson, he'll never be able to apply! LOL!

I had a black bird get int to my rotor baldes, Smack
the heli tail went wiled counter clock wise i put oppsite into
the controls and it helped but she still hit the ground.
She had bird guts all over her. I was getting ready to land
when it happen(that was a good thing). It broke one of the
woodies and when she hit the ground all it did was bend
the tail boom. It hit in a weat field that help. The next
SB ing black that gets caught by my rotor blades is going
to get tore all to hell cause i got carbon fiber on her now.LOL

I fly alot in my backyard and reglarly shred butterfly's but the other day I was hovering my Corona about ten feet in front of me and noticed a rather large hornet right beside the tail rotor.

He was just sitting there about 4-5 inches away from it like he was mezmerised by it.

He finally got a little too close and chop..

I'm glad though cause I think he was mad and I was the next closest thing to him.

See ya,
Charley

What's really interesting around here is flying at dusk. We have hundreds of fireflies in the back yard and when they get into the rotor its very spectacular. A bright flash of green, a spray of green light towards the ground and glowing spots of green scattered around the yard.

Todd, as far as I know the bird could have been attacking my plane, but I assume we were just trying to share airspace. I didn't actually see the bird. My wife and a couple of guys at the field saw it right as I hit it but all I saw was balsa showers. It would have been a great video though.

COOL! I know I visited Iowa when I was a young kid, and we would catch those fire flys, and tear them open and smear the "glow material" on things as I recall it would continue to "glow" for a little while even afetr the fly was flatlined...

What's always fun is driving through the country in the middle of "firefly season" and having them hit your windshield. Kinda weird to see big glowing goo spots on your windshield.
