Default Powering the Skymaster 1:4 3/4 Hawk

For those of you flying or who have flown the 1:4 3/4 Skymaster Hawk, which power choice would you suggest. I have both a P140rx and P180rx sitting on the bench. I'll also be flying with belly tank and wing tanks. Thanks in advance for your input.

P180 is best. Minimum powerP160 . Your p140 would fly the smaller extreme hawk. But nothing bigger.
Im not talking aerobatics .Im talking normal power to bail out from a bad approach .

I had a 140RX in my Hawk, and after a couple takeoffs from grass, I quickly dropped in a 180RX. The 140 would not get the Hawk out of the grass cleanly. And I did not have any external tank or ordinance on mine. Go with the 180 and tune it back if you must, but no lower then a 160 power.

I have one with a Rhino 160. I fly it with wing tanks and the Rhino handles it quite well. It not a speed beast but I like it that way. I would choose the 180, the 140 would be marginal power especially if take off is from grass.

Your p140 would fly the smaller extreme hawk. But nothing bigger.
Stating that the smaller SM Extreme Hawk needs a 140 sized motor is a fallacy.

I flew my SM Extreme Hawk with a Jetcat P80SE, and it was a wonderful combination. Very scale, and plenty of power for big, full-scale like aerobatics.

Never had any trouble with it performance wise. I put on 68 flights with that P80SE, before an air-bubble induced flame-out in a bad spot claimed its life.

I'm flying my 36lb DerJet Hunter (probably around 42lb fully fuelled) with a Merlin 140 (31lb thrust) - again a fantastic scale combination with more than enough power.

You don't need anything close to a 1:1 thrust/weight ratio for scale flying.

Now, if you want to be a hooligan, thrust is a must. I also have an Ultra Flash with a Merlin 140 in it - that fills my need for something over-powered
