Default OS 160 Header

I am using a Mueller header on my O.S. 160. It has since cracked. I had it welded, but it cracked again. Since Mr. Mueller is on longer in business, what are my options for replacing it? I'd hate to go with a huge stock muffler out the side and lose the power.

It looks like an OS 140 pump mounted to the Performance specialties custom pump backplate ... just a guess

The rise in the header is 3 inches from the center of the exhaust port, and the length of the header is 4 3/4 inches from the center of the exhaust port to the exit port of the header.

Matt:

Am I correct in assuming the headers is an MVVS 160 header? If so, do you have a source for the header and do you have the part number?

Thanks,
Ed

MVVS 160 header has different bolt spacings to the 160 fx. they won't marry up without a fight.

Renegade:

Do you think that it is a problem that could be remedied by simply making the bolt hole on the mounting flange larger (i.e. could you fix the problem by opening the hole up from 4 mm to 5mm or by elongating the bolt hole)?

Thanks,
Ed

Nathan/Rustywallace:

I was trying to get some headers made locally but for a number of technical reasons, I had no success. I am trying a different route and will keep you updated.

Hope I'm not cursing myself here but I've been flying OS160 with different headers and pipes for 4 years now in my pattern planes and have never had a failure. I have used different soft mounts and only one rear mount with a wire tie. Works well.

Default RE: OS 160 Header

Ed, I would appreciate it.
RC, I had a Mueller header fail after about 25 flights. Was using a Hyde firm idle mount and one rear pipe support. I even followed Bob Pastorello's OS160 cookbook and cut my header after the bend and used the remaining cut-off length of header with two couplers for stress relief. I have since added a front pipe support and haven't had any problems. I feel the front of the pipe was allowed to move around too much putting undo stress on the header. BUT, you know as well as I do, when you think it's all working fine, you will have a failure, usually at a contest. I learned that the hard way when I didn't have a back-up.... I'm on my last Mueller header now. I do have a MACS header from Central for a back-up, but it was their last one and they won't be getting anymore. So....I'm always looking for options. Might just have to join the considerably larger YS crowd!!!! Man, that's gonna hurt the pocketbook....

Saw your post on the Rev Pro. Ray Morton flew one with the OS140 through at least 2 seasons and he flies FAI and very competetivly I might add. Plenty of stuff with his combo. Even flew it with the 18.1X10 APC. I'm sure the 140 would work for you. I just sold mine after a couple of seasons in a Temptation. Set up ran perfectly always. Flip and Fly! Plane weighed in at 10# 2oz and had tons of verticle. Good luck.

RC,
Do you think I would get that kind of performance at 3000 ft. of alt.? I fly in D2, considerably lower altitude, but practice at home in the mountains of WV. Definitely less power up here.
What header, pipe, fuel combo was he using in the Rev Pro?
Thanx for the help,
Kevin

Default RE: OS 160 Header

Nathan/RustyWallace/ et al:

Just an update on the OS 160 Header issue. I have the first batch of OS 160 headers in my hands and am in the process of running one on my test bench. I have two out in the field but they have not yet flown. The headers are 3/4" ID and have a 2 3/8" rise. Header length from the plug to the aft end of the header tube is approximately 7". I do not have the option of doing custom at this time but we will see what the future brings. My test engine is a new 160 with about 1 gallon of fuel thru it running my header and an ES designs carbon pipe on Rich's Brew 15 %. I have run the APC 17X10, 17X12 and 18.1X10. The first runs were with stock length header butted up against the front of the pipe. Straight line length (from the plug to the first refelcting baffle) was 22.5" and 28.5" if you go from the plug and follow the center of the header back to the first reflecting baffle. The first reflecting baffel according to Ed at ES Composites is 15.5" back from the front of the pipe.

APC 17X10 8300
APC 17X12 8000
APC 18.1X10 8100

I shortened the header by 1/2" (length from the plug to the first refelcting baffle was 22") and the APC 17X12 turned 8250 (forgot to check the 18.1X10). I shortened the header another 1/2" (length from plug to baffle was now 21.5"and got the following):
APC 17X12 8350
APC 18.1X10 8000

I will refrain from suggesting header/pipe tuning length until we get some flight data and decide what works best for our application.

I am currently working on a test plane to fly the header but if anyone is interested in talking about the header and availability please send me an e-mail (please don't send a PM as I sometimes forget to look at them). In the "Subject" line please put "OS 160 Header".

Thanks,
Ed Valls

Hi Ed,
Thanks for pursuing a new source of headers for the folks still flying the OS160.

You're welcome. I want to fly the 160 for a pattern plane I am working on and also for some sport stuff . I am just trying to fill a need so we will see what happens.

I made up a bunch of these but sold all of them. I will make another batch soon but I am currently making molds for a bunch of Classic Pattern Planes. Once I catch up on dozens of orders for these planes I will post a blog or something for headers.

What kind of tubing bender is used with these small radius curves?
Are they welded or brazed?

I have a mandrel bender that I custom built. I can bend 3/4" tube down to a 1.5 inch radius 1"tube down to a 2" radius. I tig weld the headers. Small glow engines like the OS160 is alum tube and the larger headers like for a 100cc or 150 cc gas engine I make out of steel tube and tig weld.

Nifty! Do you have photos of your mandrel setup? I'm curious how you've set yours up vs. some of the other benders I've come across...
