Default Futaba S9153 and S9152 Digital Servos

Hi fellow modelers,

These two servos are new releases by Futaba. As most of you know one (9153) is high speed the other (9152) is considered high torque - both are actually very powerful and appear to be of high quality at a competitive price.

The servos are built on a new frame, with 6 case screws and a heavy duty output shaft - hence the problem. This HD shaft is larger in diameter than earlier Futaba servos. I am looking for aluminum arms, like most of us use on our giant scale 3D birds, which fit these shafts.

If you can get your hands on one of these servos - check it out.

Fly Safe,
Cass

The only high quality metal arm that is out there that will fit this servo thus far is the Sure-Link like of arms. This is possible because the stock disk that comes on the servo is used as the center for the arms. You have to send your disk's to sure-link and have him reduce the overall diameter, drill the holes for the 4 bolts, and remove some excess material around the spline casting to make it fit. I just got 4 9153's and 2 9152's for my Carden Extra and will be sending my centers off to Sam to get machined to work so when I replace my 9206's with these servos I will only have to disassemble the arm and put the new centers in. This is, in my opinion, the best way to go. You can also use the stock nylon arms if you want an SWB style arm. I doubt you will ever break one, they're HUGE. These should be very awesome servos and I'll write a review on them once I get some time on them.

Kelly,
Thank you for your response and suggestion. Unfortunately, the arm options with this servo are limited - I appreciate your information regarding Sure-Link.

Cass, in another thread regarding these servos I got a response for the arms that fit, I can´t seem to make a direct link but the arms are here:

They cost about $10, but are made of aluminum.

Sorry about not writing back, on the 10th flight on the airplane at the SE Regional's I lost it in a mid-air. The 9153's in the wings and 9152's in the stab's were awesome though. I felt a huge differance between those and the 9206's. I am running 2 9152's on the rudder and 2 on the stabs in my new 260 and they're ton's of power like I thought they would be. The 9152 and the 9351 are Futaba's best servo's for giant scale in my opinion.

I have read in different places (including the link I posted above) that if you use servo arms that are longer than 1 inch you reduce the torque of the servo, however these servos (9152 and 9153) come from factory with arms that are longer thatn 1 inch. Do you think that maybe these servos have been rated at their current torque with the arms they come with? Because if it is that way, it means that we could use after market arms of 1.25 to 1.5 inches without worrying of reduced torque?

These servos are really good, very precise...

I'm not sure what the standard arm length is for testing torque but I run 1.25" arms on mine and have ton's of power. It's not only the arm length you need to think about, it's the actual mechanical advantage. You could have a 5" arm but if you are connecting that linkage to a 7" horn you are still fine even with a huge arm.
