I picked up my Futaba 8U and grabbed the antenna base and noticed it was about to come out, it was so loose. I checked another-also Futaba-and found it was loose also. I've never thought to check these and thought some others may not have either. I would have to think a loose antenna has got to affect performance, even short of coming out completely!
