Default Diode isolation w/dual 123 battery packs

Hi All,
Just getting back into the hobby after a 15 year break.
I of course had to update everything, Convert my micro pro to 2.4, new batteries for everthing, and get into electrics!
I have a G38 powered prime stick, and I use two switchs in it to power the radio, from one pack.
Now, after reading SO much about 2.4 troubles (real or imagined), I wish to set up the stick (which has a couple huge servos for tail feathers and some fairly powerful ones in the wings - can't really remember what they are- but decent ones from back then) to be reliable as possible.

To that end, I was thinking maybe a couple of the LiFe packs, and a diode right before they went into the spektrum 7ch reciever. Each would have their own switch, so a bit of redundancy there. The diode would isolate the packs from each other, and provide a .7 volt drop which may be handy as I remember the giant servos would twitch on a 5 cell nicad pack sometimes. The diode would be a heavy duty 25 or 50 amp one.

Is this a common thing to do, or am I over thinking it? The isolation Ithought would be nice if one pack had a better charge than the other, or if for some reason one shorted internally.

The diodes are unnecessary.

Even though the servos get twitchy at the higher voltage?

I have had not twitchy servos with A123's. A 5 cell NiMh pack will be a little twitchy at first and then settle down before you can tune the engine and taxi.

With a123's I have not even had this problem. Adding the diodes also give you another point of failure. There are many of us using them straight up with no problems.

deadstick - how old are the servos? While newer ones might not be twitchy at higher voltages, older ones might be.

I am guessing they are at least 15 years old. Just getting back into the hobby.
I got bigger problems. Just had my micropro updated to 2.4, and then put the battery in backwards! Nice smoke show.

ouch, that hurts... sorry to hear that. While I haven't used my micropro in quite a few years, it was a pretty neat radio back when I got it.

Sorry to hear that! The other option is to cut a diode in the servo leads on the older servos. Leaving the full voltage for the AR7000.

Snuts, an excellent idea, thank you. The old connectors need need chopping off anyway!
