Bashing H9 Cherokee ARTF to C-FVLA
Gents,
I have a H9 Cherokee that'd been sitting for a couple of years in its box. Now that I have been bitten by the F4C bug, I decided it was time to take it out of the box and put it together.
This plane is not a ARTF in the couple of hours sense, but it takes quite some time to assemble.
Since I could not find a real life subject that looked like this model, I decided it was time to do some bashing, starting with the covering, basic painted vinyl that melts the moment the iron touches it.[:'(]
The subject chosen has been C-FVLA, a 1966 Piper Cherokee 140. Owner's website: http://cfvla.net
All the photos used for modelling this airplane have been taken from the owner's website, to which I'm very grateful for publishing such detailed photographs.
Yesterday I started ripping all the covering up, and finished the fuse and control surfaces. More work to be done on the wings soon, as long as I have some time.

Side note: the blue Cherokee photo in original H9 livery has been taken from this website: http://www.krugair.com/

I am an old Cherokee pilot (full scale 140-151- 180s) from back in the early 70s & have allways wanted to build a model of one. Im anxious to see how yours turns out. I'll keep an eye on this thread, and good luck with your transformation....Gene

There are plenty of Cesna's out there this size, just never seen a cherokee with that size ws. I keep hopeing one day everyone will get tired of makeing Extras, Edges & Yaks & offer one.....Gene[&o]

I have finished covering the wing, after preparing it with wood sealant and a nice sanding. Probably from being tired, I forgot to cover the aileron strips
The plastic wing tips have been cleaned with solvent and have been given one coat of plastic primer. If time permits tomorrow, I'll have a can of paint made to match the red of the covering.

Gene6029, I also owned a 180 for a few years. Sold it to buy a Lake LA-4-200T. The 180 is still a great airplane to model.

Got some masking tape today at the auto paint shop and applied it to the fuse and vertical stab. It's pretty cool, one just has to peel off the pre-cut strip where we want to paint. Now it needs plastic primer and to get some aged-gold paint.
Also got the spray can made, the closest to my covering was RAL3001 (or was it 3002[sm=confused.gif]); any way, the wing tips are painted with three coats of acrylic paint and left to dry for a few days.

Your plane is really looking good. I also have a Hangar 9 Cherokee that I've had for close to 10 years. I almost threw it away after I put it in a and broke the wing and the fuse. I ordered a wing kit and repaired and recovered the fuse. I just recovered it to look like it did when it was new. I didn't have the internet back then or it would probably look different now. This is a nice flying plane. I think you'll like it.

Not much done these days, other things to worry about...
I have painted the seats of the plane about the best I can.

If time permits, I'll start assembling the components this weekend. Only thing missing will be registration letters.
Wayne22, can you tell me the location of the licence letters on the plane other than the sides? A photo would be nice for scale perception. It seems to have one under the left-side wing, but it's hard to tell.
Thanks!

The plane is on the other side of the country and I have never seen it. There was a regulatory requirement for the registration to be on the top of one wing and the bottom of the other, but I believe that was change, and just the bottom wing ir required to be marked....I'll have to check the air regs....
It looks fabulous in the sun, though....

Under wing markings are optional provided the side markings are at least 30 cm tall....... Not sure what the actual markings on VLA are.....
(If there are underwing markings they would be under the left wing)

Some more work done today, the servo plate has been glued in place, and balsa flooring also. The seats have been finished and all windows have been glued, together with a luggage compartment curtain made out of a paper bag.
The interior has been painted with water based black acrylic, including some fuselage framing. The instrument panel is the real deal, taken from a photo of the original FVLA.
Now it only needs a pilot looking like the owner to close the cockpit.

A bit late for moustache, the cockpit is sealed, but the glasses are black sunglasses now, as he didn't seem to be using any in the photos.
I gotta paint the wing tips again, the darn acrylic paint I used isn't alcohol proof. I'll never have paint made in that shop again [sm=angry_smile.gif]
