RE: SSW DIII 1/4 scale Dave Johnson plan, Doc
Jim 1/4" is what I used for the legs on the 1/3 N28, clad with bass on the legs and usind .060 sheet for the bottom plates and all brazed together. I also used the 3/16 wire parts for the bends at the fuse that were sopplied with the kit.
Cocobear had any luck stirring up that cowl yet? I'd fit that up as soon as I could get it.

Wow it doesnt seem like the last couple days have been too productive. I have decided to provide access under the belcrank so when I sheeted the bottom from the rear spar back I left an opening and will put a hatch on that, the next area foreward of that will also have a removable cover so the gear can be removed if need be. I also brazed the tabs on for the cross brace wires and brazed on the rear gear retainer plates, Still need a spreader bar but we're getting there. Moving on...

Oh what fun! Its not as bad as I thought it was going to be but four hands would help or at least three. Various views of pieces of the fillet area. The top runs from the brace wire anchor to the rear and on the bottom two or three pieces Im not sure yet. The little former for the very trailing edge of the root rib to the fuse was stolen shamelessly from Allans 1/6 build and is manditory the way I see it. One pic shows a piece of 3/32 wrapped around a 3/4" dowel, it will be the next section between the wire anchors on top. I hope to have both sides done this afternoon. Some times I get the hoodidoos in the afternoon and things slip away.

It never ceases to amaze me the shapes wet balsa will conform to. I put the gear on and weighed it with all the radio eqpt and including the wings it sits at 12 and a quarter lbs. Still needs cabanes, a spreader bar for the gear and interplane struts as well as flying wires. Should be ready to fly at under 18 lbs. I dont know whtat the area of it is, wheres my pencil and tape measure.

Most all the fillets are near done. I wimped out and did the ones at the rear with West Systems filler, it doesnt weigh anything and it sands very easily. It takes 8 or 9 hours before you can sand it so Ive been putting on a batch going away, sanding putting on another bunch, go away ( SWMBO requires me to do outside work around here from time to time, she thinks I'm being helpful and not just waiting on epoxy to cure) come back later repeat as necessary.

The DIII looks like a serious woodworking project! Both you and Tim have some serious skills. Maybe that's why I'm drawn to the fabric-covered aircraft.

Man dont be accusing me of having any woodworking skills, if I'd have had any cahonies at all I'd have at least tried to do the rear fillets with balsa. Jim on the other hand and our friend Allan are in a class entirely different than where I'm butchering fibrous materials. Yes there's wood about everywhere and I'm gonna cover something soon just for the fabric fix!

If I had read Allans thread where he formed up the gun deck back on like page 14 I wouldnt have done some things the way I did. So I tore out some sheeting and the fuel tank box I built in and started over. Allan the pics of the deck framing and sheeting may feel a little deja-vu to you. I am doing my best to blatantly copy what you did, at least on the outside.

Creeping along slowly but making progress and getting there. The small panels at the rear below the gun cutouts mount seperately and allow fitting around the rear cabane/fuse juncture, there will be cutouts at the lower front corners of the big piece of the gun deck for the front cabane/fuse joint which will have some alum formed around it. the gun is temp mounted to the deck with dbl stk tape.

I recieved my other Spandau gun and some epoxy today, so have that to start fooling with. I have built a fixture to help with setting up the cabanes. I'm figuring this out as I go, I have some music wire, 4130 tubing and some fittings and will start cutting soon.

I have a mess of pieces cut and discovered that my oxy regulator has crapped out on me and so I have ordered a new one. Just as well as I've been down for the past three days with what would best be described as food poisoning symptoms and have spent a lot of time in my recliner, asleep! Here are a couple of pix of most of the pieces

I'm about finished with what turned out to be a particularly vicious round of the crud (flu, walking pneumonia, bronchitis, whatever).I have recieved the new regulator for my gas welding set and Dave got all settled down following Top Gun and mailed the cowl about a week ago so were about to get back into this. I have done nothing in the shop for nearly three weeks and am suffering withdrawl, Texas drawl y'all. Oh well good to feel better and will have a few errands tomorrow to pick up oxygen and some oyher stuff.

Hi Doc.
There sure is a lot of balsa in one of those planes hey! Nice work, and there seems to be a lot of complicating curves and such. I think I'll stick to the square easy planes! Although I love the D-III.
Enjoying your build

I was running a paralell thread for this build on RCSB and a guy has chimed in that is designing a buck to spin up some cowlings for the DIII. Prices are expected to be close to what BUSA gets for 1/4 scale ally cowls. Any one interested should send me a PM so I can provide more details as they become available. We have agreed on basic dimensions and material thickness and he is working on the buck now and has access to a company that spins various items comercially so these wont be from a beginner or made on amateur equipment.

Doc, I was putting my BUSA laser cut D.VII kit away in my stash and I saw the SSW cowl you sent me. I'm finally getting around to looking at the plans for this. I'm pretty intimidated by it. I was just stumbling around the internet trying to find a materials list to buy and I found this thread. I already have a short kit cut for it. I'll check out your thread on RCSB.
