RE: THE MOST BEAUTIFUL AIRPLANES
Wallace,
Yea it was called "old shaky" I remember taking a load of ROTC guys to Las Vegas in one of ours from Pittsburgh ( I was in the AF reserves there) and it took us 10 hours to get to Vegas with them. We would send them to Viet Nam with supplies They would stop at the Azores for refueling and then go on to Nam. When they got back we would have to varsol them down to get all of the oil off of them. We actually had a small tank truck with varrsol in it to get all of the oil off of them.

RE: THE MOST BEAUTIFUL AIRPLANES
Gotta remember that beauty is more than skin deep. When I was working for NASA back in the 60's and 70's, we had a big variety of types. F-104's, F-15's, F-18, F-16, Aero Commander, SR-71, B-52, etc. But after a short time, if I was walking across the ramp and one started up or flew over, I never even bothered to watch. Unless, UNLESS it was our C-47. That's the only airplane that always held my attention. The sound of those engines starting up and belching smoke is a thrill that never went away. And the smell is even better !
One other thing that was worth hearing: The starter for the SR-71. The start cart was powered by two hopped up Buick engines. The SR was just another loud, stinky jet plane. But, oh, those start carts ! Those twin Buicks sounded like Indianapolis when they came up to power to crank the plane. And you could still hear the Buicks once the jet was running at idle. When the cart was powered down the Buicks rapped and snapped something beautiful.

How can you beat the F4U? The B-17 is high on my list followed by Douglas Dauntless and Connie.
Beechcrafts staggerwing is very highly over rated.

RE: THE MOST BEAUTIFUL AIRPLANES
I like a wide variety of planes, I don't have any one plane I think is "the most beautiful". Who doesn't think a 182, Bonanza, Corsair, Spitfire, P-51, F-15, F-14 ,F-16 , etc, etc, etc. are beautiful planes?
I think they all are beautiful with very few exceptions.
But if you were to tell me you were going to give me any full scale plane of my choice as well asthe $ to operate and maintain it, these are the ones that I would be considering and believe I could probably fly competently with minimal training.....
Vintage warbird prop - P-38
Vintage warbird jet - F-86
Modern warbid jet - A-10
Vintage civilian prop Super Cub or J-3
Modern civilian prop plane - Corvalus

RE: THE MOST BEAUTIFUL AIRPLANES
For a warbird , I love the looks of the P 47 razorback, For the vintage, I love the Mr. Mulligan or the Beech 17 Staggerwing. Thats just my opinion. Actualy, if it has some sort of wings, I love it.
