RE: BUSA Nieuport 17
If I were building a 17 and using a two-stroke engine, I would probably go ahead and use the kit. It is a pretty good value for all that you get, especially with the price of wood going up the way it seems to be.

Nini,
Do you have a source for the insignia on the side of your N17? Or can you e-mail me a good grpahic? I lost my N17 in February. The wife says I must build a new one. So, I want to make a few improvements this time.

Guys THANKS for the multi angle edited videos !
I have been doing this also for awhile and it is so cool to see it fly by, and to have multiple views from on board. It really helps me make it thru the winter watching videos like these. It makes you jealous of the fun your plane is having up there sometimes !

Well, eleven years along and the N-17 is still puttering around the sky. I didn't fly it as much during the first decade as I would have liked due to difficulty getting it in and out of the basement but I don't have that excuse any more. I've flown it a bit more in the last couple of years now that I have a more accessible shop. In the mean time I have had a dead stick due to losing the cylinder when it came unbolted from the engine block. Luckily the motor quit and didn't beat itself to death. The Homelite was easily repaired. In the last year I have made a spreader bar for the landing gear. It really helps with the tendency of the gear to splay out when taxing back in after a flight. The last time out was an adventure. Immediately after take off I discovered that I had very little aileron response. I knew they were working as I had waggled them just before the takeoff roll. I was having to use full aileron deflection to get any roll at all. Luckily the airplane is stable enough to fly it like a three channel airplane and the rudder has a lot of authority, enough to roll the airplane level. I put it right back down on the ground with no damage. Now for the rest of the story. I left the wing struts at home, a twenty minute drive. I recalled that I had built the wings with hardwood spars and lots of shear webs and told myself that it was plenty strong. It was but I didn't consider torsional rigidity which the wing doesn't have. The wing was flexing to a degree that ailerons had no effect. I won't be doing that again!
