Default Gefechtsauflaerer "Leopard" VK16.02

Thought it was about time I posted pics of this build its been at this stage for a couple of months now, so it might get me moving on it again

Started with a Heng long Jagdpanther lower hull chopped to length and about 10mm cut out of the width.
followed the plans from Panzer tracts.
This was a tank designed in 1942 and cancelled in January 1943 so a mid war tank not late war .....so think Panther Ausf D rather than G, as it has most of the features associated with the Ausf D .....stepped rear hull, hinged snorkel cover, swiveling drivers hatches, drivers view port in the front glasis etc
when I made the Leopard I was copying details from the Panther such as bolts on the engine deck being recessed, recessed holes around the drivers hatch plate etc

I still have some details to finish mainly on the rear plate and need to add gun elevation and recoil to the turret

so on to the pics-

Cheers Ian

Oh, oh! I want it! Err, I mean ... I want one too! MAN! This looks nice and although it's not a big 'tank killer' threat, it would be a fun tank to zip around on a battlefield with!

So, the big question ... camo or one solid color?

looks great!  how about a little more a build thread?  One that walks us through the various parts used and the research completed.

BTW...did you find a way to stiffen the turret smoke dischargers?  Those look like Asiatam's.  I had a set, but thought that the mount was going to be too flimsy.

Just a few more exp points in World of Tanks and I get my VK. Actually I am seeing a lot of the lesser known tanks or paper tanks from that game show up in this forum.

Truly a fine job on this one.

Thanks for the comments guys

@panther F not sure what colour yet but I do want to do an authentic scheme from one of the Panther units just to make it more believable. Saying that I do like this scheme http://suntankwork.com/product/?86_538.html

@philipat I haven't got anymore pics from the build stages but I will take some more pics and descibe what parts I used sometime towards the end of the week as I am on the nightshift this week so what little time I have is taken up with the baby and the kids.
As for the smoke dischargers they are a bit flimsy I probably should have just used heng long panzer III ones.

cheers Ian

Thought the same thing about the smoke dischargers.  Don't think HL has them for the PzIII...I think it does for the StugIII, though.  Or, try the ones from Schumo.  a little expensive, but very nice and solid.  You can use the cups you already have or buy the cups used in Shumo's Tiger smoke dischargers (order the cups separately from the Tiger dischargers).

As promised some more pics

The chassis-
I cut the heng long Jagdpanther chassis to length taking the measurements from a set of plans I had enlarged from panzer tracts book on paper panzers.
I then narrowed the heng long Jagdpanther chassis by first cutting out the battery box and cutting about 10mm out of the centre, before gluing the two halves back together again and reinforcing the chassis by adding plastic card to the bottom and top of the chassis. I also added some more plasic card down the insides to thicken the walls and added pieces to the tops to level the top of the sides.

The gearboxes-
I added more plastic card until it was level with the top of the mounting pegs for the gearboxes before drilling right through the the chassis and bolting the gearboxes into place

I also added working idler arms from http://www.tank-modellbau.de/

I also added metal suspension arms and uprated springs

Cheers Ian

The upper hull-
This was scratchbuilt using plastic card all hatches etc were also shaped from plastic card. The two fan grills where from a pantiger which were modified before adding mesh screens made from antispatter mesh used for cooking (bought two for a pound from a pound store)

The turret-
This was again made from plastic card and a heng long pershing turret base was fitted into the bottom.
All details again made from plastic card apart from the smoke launchers from Asiatam and the hatch hinges were cut of asiatam tiger 1 front hatches.
I left the turret roof as a seperate piece so I will have access to the turret interior, copied this idea from the tamiya tiger 1
I also added tamiya rollers to the upper hull for the turret to turn on

the mantlet was made up of circles of plasticcard of different sizes glued together and then milliput was added over the top for the final shape

Cheers Ian

Finished the details on the back plate again mainly cut from the Jagdpanther rear plate or plastic card. The exhausts are resin casts of pantiger exhausts.
And got the primer coat on.

Loved this build, the Leopard has to be one of my favourite tanks.

For battle reasons, I believe the Leopard was designed to use the 5cm L60 so using rarer ammo it could technically penetrate just below 100mm armour at under 100m.

I didn't know that HL made smoke dischargers for the PZIII. Maybe I should have looked in the box closer?
