What’s the thing on this Abrams?
I’m looking through Abrams pictures online and I come across this device. I think, “Hey, I can make one of those.” So I do. It came out well, but now I wonder what it is.
Any ideas? I would sure like to know what it is. There are two variants, this one and one with a round top hole. The round hole seems more common, but much harder to scratch build.

I've been calling it the "Russian grenade storage bin". It seems like a handy place for Russian infantry to store extra grenades.

Not sure. I'm not a M1 tanker, but I found this image on the Wikipedia page listing a similar part as a snorkel. Can't tell from your photos if the part is a snorkel or an exhaust deflector. My guess is (if not a snorkel) it's an exhaust deflector. When moving it won't matter, but if stationary, you don't want the exhaust (there's a lot of it from an Abrahms, especially on startup) to create dust clouds that give away your position. I've only seen those on the tanks painted for desert ops. So, my guess is exhaust deflector to minimize the dust kick-up that happens in a desert environment.

Its an exhaust diffuser - the gas turbine exhaust is so hot that it will melt anything in its path. Prior to their fitment, if an Abrams had to tow another it was a risky proposition as the hot exhaust caused the towed vehicle to burn over time. At least one of the burned out Abrams you will find on the internet was down to it's stowage (AT mines in the turret basket, I think) getting over heated by the exhaust of the towing tank and catching fire.
Only the prompt actions of the responsible NCO saved both of the tanks from a massive explosion (again according to the internet...).
Also following infantry couldn't follow, because of the 800 degree exhaust...

I'm having bacon and beer for dinner tonight, then I'm working on weathering the Abrams.
