ESM FW D-9

RE: ESM FW D-9
Too funny Vertical. Many ppl have commented on the prop noise alone sounding like an IC motor with several of the planes I currently fly that have electric motors.
tell ya what...if you really want me to fly a 190 with a gas motor...how bout we stuff the 50cc motor in the esm fw-190a8 I still have unbuilt

RE: ESM FW D-9
Kahlog and Velco,
Will retarding the timing on my Rimfire 50cc motor help reduce the amp draw to lengthen my flight time? Also, how about limiting my throttle travel volume to govern the motor? I must stay with a two blade prop since I have already spent $150 on the two blade spinner. I have exceeded 3K on this ship and am tapped out!
I have quickly realized that the high KV motor I have chosen is not a good choice for modest scale flying. The 65cc option is much better and will even add more weight to the nose where it is needed.
Regards,
Doug Andre

RE: ESM FW D-9
Yes, reducing timing will reduce the power but not significantly, but it can reduce the heat generated significantly. What is your current timing? You can experiment with the minimum timing at which the motor will work correctly.
Reducing the throttle curve can also help but only a setting of 85% or below is safe because if it is set at 90% or above you may damage the FETs with a prolonged full throttle.
The best way of reducing the power is by putting a smaller prop. I will repeat again, start with 20x8 and move on to 20x10 or 19x10.

RE: ESM FW D-9
Velco,
I tried the APC 20x8 E and logged 93 amps at 4300 watts static and tied down. The motor, ESC and batteries were much happier. This is a very reasonable combination and will indeed "tame the beast".
Flying photos by next week.

Doug Andre

Stop all that electric talk! If you wanna fly formation with the other D9's at the field, you will need an engine in there. The only way to make it sound like a warbird!

Really...
Some people like electrics, and I'm not hearing them crack'n on you for your gassers...
They can be plenty fast and sound good too.

RE: ESM FW D-9
rather comical how those that pick fun at electric setups and think their gassers far outfly any electric simply dont understand....the electric is flying at half throttle just to slow down enough for the gasser to catch up.

Also...theres no way I will have $3000 in this plane when done. At most 2k

RE: ESM FW D-9
kahlog,
Thanks for the link on the scale spinner. I will look into one for the correct shape alone!
I have actually exceeded $3000 on this one if you include batteries!
Airframe $715
Motor $225
ESC $230
Retracts$525
Tail Ret. $180
Wheels $115
Receiver$145
Servos $360
Cockpit $79
Batteries$615
Pilot $32
Spinner $ 149
Misc. $95
Total...$3465!

RE: ESM FW D-9
I dont count the batteries because I have other planes that use them, so that cost is mitigated.
As for the retracts, Im going to try the ESM Gen II electric set thats coming end of this month. It has the tail retract with it so the entire set is $450. I asked Tomas at VQ and he said they are supposed to come with the ESM aluminum wheels and not the plastic looking things in the pics.....so if so, that'll save more money. Otherwise, Williams Bros has some ok looking tires that will work for $20 each.
The esc I have is a 160 amp 12s turnigy....$120
Id like to do a cockpit, but we'll see.
I have plenty of BBI and Dragon figures on hand so no extra cost in using one.

RE: ESM FW D-9
But Kahloq, you must admit that the ultimate irony would be electrics in a Mustang.
I mean, think about it, the Mustang had endurance, it could fly all the way to Berlin....
The electric setups struggle making 10 minutes.
hehe, just kidding!

RE: ESM FW D-9
I am really tired of this gas vs electro talk. Some time ago I agree cost was an issue, today if one plans carefully, many different types of planes in different sizes can be flown from one battery type cell, in my case it is 5S 4.900mAh flown either as 5S or 10S, so even this argument is gone. Also if the batteries are well taken care of they last at lest for 3 seasons.
And btw my self being a mechanical engineer what the heck has a 2 stroke 50cc engine to do with 12l or 16l 4 stroke engine, apart running on the same type of fuel? I really do not get it!? Is the sound a problem? Then put a Benedini or a Sound Inc module inside and you have all the sound and noise you want. Oh but it is not real, it is just imitating. Sorry but what is a then a 50cc 2 stroke doing if not just imitating? But it has a piston moving up and down, it is greasy and usually unreliable ... well, I can live without that.
Let me honestly ask you, who the heck needs to stay 15-20 min in the air? Also a battery powered airplane can stay that long in the air if flown gently, but who wants to fly that way? Me certainly not.
Just my 5 cent.

Personally I like to fuel and go. I do not like the science project, baby sitting aspect of dealing with batteries. It is even more of an issue with these high power systems. To each thier own. I have my preference. I am just an engine guy. And when flying demos, we need to be in the air a while.

RE: ESM FW D-9
If I knew this motor would fit, Id slap this in the D9. But oh wait...how many ppl would then b! tch at me for using a radial in a plane that had an inverted v-12??????????
It would definitely SOUND more realistic then any gas 2 stroke single/twin, but the scale police would be all over me.
Think of it...a 65cc FUEL motor / multi-cylinder / awesome sound!!! But... as soon as some know-it-all saw that it was a radial engine, they'd give me grief. "dont you know that the D9 had an inverted engine???? Duh...only the original 190 has a radial. Laughing as the guy walks away." Not realizing I knew that already.

Ultimately, who cares what engine you have behind the spinner.. It's not full scale so as long as it makes you happy.....it's your buck! Personally if it were me, to get a more realistic sound that I'd like for the money, I'd do it too. Just post a video If you do.

I agree that a radial would be best looking in a plane designed for it like the Anton and would turn more heads but like vertical states, it's all about fun. I don't even know you...yet but if I'd seen it, I'd tease you a little and then comment on how cool your Dora looked!
Have fun with it. You could always take that extra step and install the radiator. That way no one would know what was making that awesome sound...[8D]
