Martin Mauler and/or Grumman Guardian drawings?
Anybody know of a source for decent scale drawings of the Martin AM-1 Mauler or Grumman AF-2 Guardian? Books, web sites, old magazines, or whatever. Thanks in advance.

Hi Chad - I guess you may have seen this one? If not, there a couple of leads you could follow-up down the bottom of the page.
http://www.aviationtrivia.info/Martin-AM-1-Mauler.php
One of them is regards to Hellcat(1) who posted a pic of his 69" version here a few years ago - but I think you may already know that as you posted on he thread yourself! Here it is anyways.

Chad,
I actually have a set of plans, .60 - .90 size, that i obtained over 20 years ago from an old guy in our club. I will dig thru and see if I can find them. I always thought I would hold on to them and built it, but I have never found the time. I will have to dog thru the stuff and see if I can find them. I know there is a set out there of this plane. If I am not mistaken they came from the old RCM magazine. Will let you know if I find them.

RC Modeler had an article by Claude McCullough on building his scale model of the plane. (It may have been their scale special edition)
Also found this book on the Guardian from the same company. Also 84 pages

Thanks for the help gents, much appreciated.
Drifter, do you own the Mauler book pictured in your post? I considered purchasing it but could not find any source that confirmed whether or not it contained scale drawings. Do you know if the 3-views provided in the book contain any cross sections of the fuselage?

Thanks for the replies gentlemen, much appreciated.
Flyin Hwn, I'm not aware of any plans for the Mauler other than the McCullough ones from RCM linked to above. It's a cool bird though ain't it?

For anyone who may not yet know, Jerry Bates Plans has a 1/6.5 Guardian plans available. His wood kit is available from Bob Holman. Specs: 112" wingspan, 40-45 lbs., 5.0 ci. gas motor or bigger. Also Dave Platt uses the Guardian as the basis for his excellent "Scratch This" video series. He doesn't actually design a scale Guardian in the videos, but he does show you how. Very entertaining, and educational even if you have no plans to design or build a Guardian. I'm 99% certain Platt discusses his persuit of 3-views and lets you know where to get them. I'll get the videos out, watch 'em and post the info here, ASAP. 'buff

I followed-up on the DP video and he said there was a usuable 3-view in the previously mentioned Naval Fighters Number Twenty book. He also stated that a much more detailed version from the Aeromodeler Magazine, is available from Bob Holman, 909-885-3959. Hope this helps someone. I would love to see someone take on the Bates Guardian and chart the build here on RCU. 'buff

Thanks for the info balsabuff. I have the "Scratch This" video series and I did recall that Platt used the Guardian as his example. However, all my videos are in VHS format and I no longer own a VHS player! I may give Holman a call regarding the drawings but I'm leaning more towards the Mauler at this point. Although having a full size Guardian at Falcon Field certainly adds a point in its favor. Glad to hear Jerry has a Guardian plan available but it's a bit too big for my tastes. I'm looking for something that would make a good companion to my Hellcat design but would end up being a bit larger when built to the same 1/8 scale. At that scale the Mauler ends up being 75 inches, perfect for my tastes. The Guardian works out to be 91 inches at 1/8 scale! Still a bit bigger than I would like.

My dad built one about 20 years ago. It flew great. He competed in scale with it. Had a droppable tail hook and powered by an OS 90. It is now in the Martin museum in Maryland. I will let him know about the thread.
