Hmmm, been building this Yak 9 and came across this color scheme. I thought it was ...different...wonder how it performed against the spitfire?

RE: Spitfire Brotherhood (All Spitfires Welcome)
I have a little treat for the brotherhood. I was printing some Duxford pics from few years back I thought I would share. Notice the female mechanic working on the Spit 22. I thought about asking her to help me adjust the valves on my bike, but then she probably doesn't do only 2 cyl. jobs... )))

I'm still trying to find a decal set for a 1/5 Spit, anybody have a set or know of where I can order some?

Ed, you might give Yellow Aircraft a call. Their web site indicates that their Spitfire kit comes with 2 sheets of decals. http://www.yellowaircraft.com/props/spitfire.htm

RE: Spitfire Brotherhood (All Spitfires Welcome)
A quote from a source in Wikipedia profile says :Soviet pilots regarded the Yak-9's performance as on the same level as the Bf 109G and Fw 190A-3/A-4." It did suffer from engine reliability problems according to 3 sources I read.
http://www.1jg51.net/jg51/109G6Yak9.html BF-109G vs YAK 9
Performance Overview: The 109G-6 and the Yak 9 have very similar performance. On the deck, their top speeds are equal, while the Yak 9 turns a bit better, the 109G-6 due to it's great climb rate can still dictate the vertical energy fight. Both of these fighters have two 12.7mm machine guns on the cowl, and a 20mm cannon firing through the Spinner. The Yak 9's 20mm Shvak cannon has a higher rate of fire, while the 109G-6's MG 151/20 carries a larger magazine of shells.
The single glaring difference between these two aircraft is high altitude performance. The Yak 9 lacks a supercharger, thus suffers terribly at higher, and even medium altitudes. This weakness is the key to beating the Yak 9, in all engagements you should strive to keep the fight at 2km or higher. While performance is equal on the deck, exploiting the Yak 9's weakness really reduces the amount of work necessary to get the kill.
http://raf.wikia.com/wiki/Supermarine_Spitfire On this page the Yak 9 is listed as a comparable aircraft.
http://www.russianaeros.com/yak9product.htm
The Yak-9 is widely recognised as one of the best fighters of the Second World War. While this is clearly a sweeping statement (and of course within individual types of aircraft, there were a wide variety of models, differing greatly from each other in performance), we feel it is broadly true.
By virtue of its exceptionally small size and therefore very high power-to-weight ratio coupled with powerful controls, a Yak-9 will outmanoeuvre, out-climb and out-run all its direct competitors such as the P-51 and Spitfire, as well as Me109 and FW190. In particular, it has exceptional performance at low level, which is of course of much greater interest in terms of today’s usage.
So... if you can believe all of these sources, pretty evenly matched.

I started work on my Kyosho Spit today. The first thing I did was take out the stock mechanical retracts and put in a set of Hobby King electric retracts and struts.
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...m_1pc_54g.html
You can see how they work in this video: http://youtu.be/B0uR9yJv6gI

radfordc;
The gear look sweet, but, my question is how they hold up under use!!! My club field loves to eat retract!!!! Now if the owner of our field, let us put in a pave runway, that would be sweet, but we share the field with 25 cows. So the pave strip is out!!! And if we could, the cows would still leave those wet cow pies on the runway like they do now!!!!
Please keep the build up-dates coming!!!

Hey Sonny,
bottom of the wing looks good. I have never done any glassing, nore building from a kit.
I admire all of you guys that are able glue all the spars, bits and pieces together with
finess and acuracy.
I am going to give it a try on my next project.
Keep the build updates coming.
Andreas
Happy building and flying.

Welcome to the squadron raaf.
I like the sliding canopy on your H9 Spit.
It took me a few tries to get mine going.
Yours is going to look great.
Did you make a cut out on the top of the nose in
the left picture?
If so, what is it for?
I am still trying to figure out how to tell the fuel reserve in
the tank as there is no easy access when the wings are
mounted.

RE: Spitfire Brotherhood (All Spitfires Welcome)
Hi radfordc,
nice retracts. They seem to work well in your video.
I had bad luck with my e-retracts in my T28 Airfield Trojan.
They would work off and on eventhough there was no binding.
I finally got tired of belly landings with broken props andmoded/retrofitted mechanical retracts into it.
Let us know how they hold up when you get the Spit up and flying.
I might try some on my next Spitfire project.

RE: Spitfire Brotherhood (All Spitfires Welcome)
Hi there everyone.
Have read through all 80 odd pages of this"Spitfire Brotherhood" forum,- have loved all the coments, info and just general positivity towardsone of my favourite passions from the age of 7. ( the eliptical wings hooked me in).
I would love to join this Spitfire Brotherhood....I am getting the Parkzone Spitfire as a birthday pressy and hope to be able to build something a bit more substantial at a later date.
Hence why I am soaking up all this invaluable knowledge on tap. Keep up all the amazing work.

Jet, you might check out the Mount Rainier Radio Control club. No cows or cow pies and a great paved strip. Not too far from Olympia.

However, I had to machine them to fit the retract units that I used: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...arehouse_.html
