Jaz,

AR7350 7-Channel AS3X Receiver (SPMAR7350) is the answer to not only better landings but the ability to fly most any scale plane like a real pro. It just might be what your new Spit needs to tame its wild thoroughbred behavior down to suite your tastes perfectly. The "AS3X" technology used on my otherwise impossible-to-land HH Hawker Hurricane made it easy to fly and it landed perfectly with and without deflected flaps on it's maiden flights. The last maiden flight was flown in a 21 MPH wind and landed beautifully. Turbulence tried to roll the plane but that fabulous receiver just allowed a gentle rocking back and fourth. Made me look like I knew what I was doing! The following URL brings up my Hurricane adventures. http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/park...hurricane.html I plan to use one of the above mentioned receivers on my upcoming H-9 Spitfire.

The lady fighter pilot who just recently demonstrated that she has the RIGHT STUFF needed to cure terrorism reminds me of you and your revolutionary accomplishments. So, keep on aiming high, flying, fighting, and winning!

Out.

Hi Guys,

It has been a good weekend for the maiden of my refurbished Pica 1/5 Spitfire. All up I had two flights, one yesterday and one today. Both had teething issues but the flights were very enjoyable.

The maiden flight yesterday was straight forward with it getting off the ground easily. Needed quite a bit of right aileron and a lot of down elevator to trim out and once done flew very nicely.

The flight lasted about 4 minutes as the DLE55RA suffered from some cooling issues resulting in a major loss of power so it was a decision to get back down very quickly. The idle speed due to the heat was high which left me with a fast approach. Due to the lack of power I decided not to go around as the engine might have died all together. The landing ended up with the Spitfire on its spinner as it reached a rough patch at the end of the strip but apart from some paint off the spinner there was no damage.

During the afternoons post flight checks and fixes I enlarged the air exits for the engine.

The second flight today was much better. The Spitfire tracked really well on take-off not needing anywhere near as much right rudder as my 72.5” ESM Spitfire which has a DLE-30 fitted. The flying characteristics of the Pica Spit are really nice. I needed to add rudder on right turns to clean them up, the left turns are fine. This Spitfire with the DLE55 tracks really well with plenty of power and speed. The flight lasted about 5 minutes where the engine started to go off so I brought it in for an uneventfully smooth landing. It slows well and is predictable on approach. Even though the gear is in the original location it settled on the mains nicely and dropped the tail when the speed washed off.

The engine going off was one engine mount bolt snapping resulting in the engine standoffs shaking loose. Not a big deal though I will be replacing all the bolts before the next flight.

All up the Spitfire flew very well with the below setup.

C.G. 5 3/8 inches from the leading edge at the wing dowel
Prop: Mejzlik 20x12 2 Blade
Dry Weight: 24.5lb (11.1kg)

The pic below taken today is my Pica Spitfire next to a really nice Yellow Aircraft Spitfire belonging to a member of my club. They are the same size wingspan but the Yellow Aircraft Spit looks so much bigger in the fuselage.

Kittyktjaz , it sounds like the left wing is heaver than the right and possibly
a little tail heavy none the less congrats on the maiden keep on tweaking it until
lit takes off and lands the way it should

Hi Jim,

Will have to check the axial balance. Good thing is this plane flies really well straight off so it probably wont need much tweaking.

The CG feels perfect in flight, I would not say it was tail heavy. On the second flight after being trimmed both the takeoff and landing was easy and predictable. Much easier than my 30cc Spitfire and in fact most of my other gas planes.

I am hoping next weekend to get some good video of the Spitfire in flight.

I think I'm the only Hobby King Spitfire guy! lol! I've got 11 flights on my HK 89" Spitfire, I pride myself on my landings, the Spit is a bit of a challenge. I nailed the first 3 landings because we had a gentle breeze going right down the runway. The landings in my video are with a cross wind, that makes it a challenge. Also the plane floats, so I am still working on my spot landings with this bird, I tried to land in front of the camera but it would always try and float on by!

My observations on landings, don't use full flaps on a windy day, it will cause the tail to come up at touchdown, especially if you are a little fast. Set up your approach and use throttle and not elevator, on landing elevator controls airspeed and throttle controls altitude. When you slow the plane down you will be holding back pressure on the elevator, then when power is added it will cause the nose to rise. I like to slow it down and drag it in with power for a 3 point or tail down landing. Typically I touch down with full up elevator, this can be done if you get it slow and use power. I'll post more landing video's as I get more time on the Spitfire and I have an assistant to video them.

To all of the persons who are part of this Brotherhood, sorry for my absence. I have been busy with may plane projects trying to make since of them all. I will try harder to stay in touch more often, and with winter coming that may make it easier.

I cannot understand why Mr. Clark refuses to sell the 1/4 scale Spitfire kit without the Merlin II engine? I would think that if he sold the kits without the Merlin II engine, Spitfire sales would more then likely double if buyers could install their own choice of engine after purchase. Just my humble oppinion!!

Gary, I have not yet but if it's anything like their other motors I should be pretty happy...

ForcesR, I have the Merlin II twin and it's shaken itself apart twice post a rebuild by John Clark ($1500 US). I've just shipped the motor back to Canada again (3rd time) as the front cylinder is floating and the center section is loose again.. When it was running well it was very underpowered with his 3blade 24X10 prop... I'm guessing the DA100 will produce 50 to 75% more power and it'll swing a huge 28X10 2 Blade or a 24X12 3blade Mejzlik CF prop...

I've asked Darryl at Sierra if he can create spinners for me... I couldn't find a 6.5inch Spitfire spinner anywhere (Gene Barton has one for a P40, TruTurn has a Ultimate one)

I just sent the motor back to DA as I hoped to use the Merlin II's exhaust but the carbs on the DA are in the way... I'll put a faux header on the left side and have both cylinders feed into the one on the right...

wish me luck..

Sparky; with the amount of money you have been spending on the Clark Merlin II engine and what you paid for the DA100, you may have been able to purchase one of these inline 4 stroke gas Kolm engines; IL100 or IL135? Either engine would probabily fit rather nicely into your 1/4 scale Clark Spitfire. If I had a 1/4 scale Spitfire or Mustang, I would have a Kolm engine installed for sure, and I would be the envy of every flyer at our club field!

Clark Merlin II - $3,500.00cdn = $3,143.67usd

Kolm IL100 - $2,350.00eur = $2,950.27usd
Kolm IL135 - $2,475.00eur = $3,096.68usd

Hi Brothers and Sisters;
Here is a must see video!!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ste1OiUCMgg
We have seen ground crews ride on the tail of the Spit when they taxi out for takeoff, see what happen when one did not get off in time!!
Enjoy!!
